The challenge rating for the nagpa from MPMotM feels like it is too high. While the Offensive CR matches the challenge rating, the defensive seems way lower than it should be. Is there something in the stat block that I'm missing that I should account for. I'm already factoring in the three save proficiencies, the base hit points, and the natural AC. It doesn't have any resistances or immunities. Does the paralysis bonus action affect the CR in any way? I'm trying to create a homebrewed version of a nagpa and need to know if I'm missing something.
Spellcasters tend to be less tanky and don't think it would be best suited for solo encounter. But mixed with other monsters, it can be quite impactful.
The problem is the nagpa's defensive cr is too low for it to be a CR 17 creature. What am I missing?
It's not a frontliner like a Dragon Tortoise. It's a Spellcaster with nasty spells and abilities. It doesn't have immunities or resistances or Legendary actions/resistances, but it does have a high AC and typical HP.
Would you expect your party wizard (non-bladesinger) to charge into melee, get hit, and complain about their defensive abilities?
It's offensive CR is 17 while its defensive CR is 11. That would make it actually a CR 14 creature. However, it's CR is listed as 17. I'm wondering why that is. The Defensive CR matters in the calculation of the CR of a creature. So, is it that WotC didn't care about defensive CR when calculating or is it that the paralysis effect actually affects the CR? If the paralysis effect does affect the CR, what is the bonus?

A lot of CR is a mess, but my guess is that they're counting corruption and paralysis as part of its defensive CR -- they're bonus actions so usable the same round as casting spells, so it's going to last a lot longer than its hit points suggest due to enemies simply being unable to attack.

If the paralysis and corruption is giving additional effective hit points, how much would that be? I need to know for my homebrew creature. This also matters if AOE shutdowns actually are taken into account for CR Calculation.

By the rules in the DMG, no, but actual stat blocks are often inconsistent with those rules. And for homebrew... determining CR is actually mostly an academic exercise.

How to add Tooltips.

Did you factor in the spells?

I factored in the spells which only affected the offensive challenge rating.
