In a campaign I'm running, which goes from level 1-20, I'm planning on giving one of my players a Slaad Tadpole familiar at one point. Later, once they reach level 10, I'm planning on giving them the option to forgo levelling up for the entire party once in return for having the tadpole grow up into a full Red Slaad to continue following them. Is this unbalanced? Should I change anything about it? To be clear, I'm not trying to make it make sense for canon dnd lore, just purely wondering if it would be balanced or not.
10 levels seems like a steep trade-off for a Red Slaad. I'd say maybe give the trade at 14 or even 16. The difference between a level 10 and a level 20 character is huge.
