My entry is not about if this spell is good or powerful. Instead I am interested in two things and how they may interact:
1. The spell description says (no matter version 2014 or 2024) you call forth a bestial spirit within the spells Range of 90 ft. Can such spirit ever distance itself beyond 90 ft. of its summoner? And if so, what would happen, because
2. It obeys its casters commands - no action required. If no command is given it takes the dodge action and moves to avoid danger. Have those commands to be repeated each turn the caster is up, even though no action is required doing that?
What I am getting at is, if it is possible/allowed for the caster to for example give the standing order to the summoned beast to go east and attack everything it sees, whilst continuing to concentrate on the spell and comfortly travelling in the opposit direction? Or would that beast stop attacking and start dodging the moment it is out of hearing range of its summoner and can no longer hear his commands?
What are your thoughts on this? If Mr. Crawford is by any chance reading this I certainly would not object to hearing his esteemed opinion.
For 1, it can definitely go beyond the 90 ft after you cast it. If it could not, the spell would say so.
For 2, that’s a grey area. The way I read it, you can’t not give it a standing order like that. It has to be given on each initiative count. And if you are walking in an opposite direction, and far enough away to not be in the fight, you won’t have an initiative count for it to go on. Additionally, you have to give it a verbal command, and if you’re far away, it wont hear you.
