Don't get me wrong, I don't disagree that they are Shapechangers. JC's RAI tweet is quite clear.
I'm just trying to get Jay to understand that rudely telling people to "pay more attention" to something that was, at the time the thread was created years ago, unclear is unnecessary and unhelpful.
I legit wasn't trying to be rude about it my bad if it came off that way.. that wasn't my intent the intent was to critic those who were talking about stuff they didn't know as fact and I've already made that clear previously(can we all get over that already?). But as matt link confirms what I said that the info was out there around the time frame this forum was originally active. As far as I was aware PC changelings(short of homebrew) only came about in Eberron. At that time even here on DnD Beyond that info is there. and that picture was taken from this website... Eberron it states they are shapechangers under the traits as well. That's the reason they used that name in particular as opposed to something else.
That's fair. I'll drop the "way it was said" guff.
It was not clear, though. Stack Exchange is not an official resource and, therefore, we cannot use it as dispositive information when considering what is or isn't RAW.
Per JC's tweet, a creature must be designated as a shapechanger with a tag (ie. creature type) or other text designating it as such. There was confusion as to whether a racial trait/feature's name was enough to "designate" a creature as a specific type since, using the Elves as an example, Fey Ancestry does not make an Elf's creature type Fey nor does it designate it as one.
Take the Doppleganger as an example: its creature type is Monstrosity (Shapechanger) in addition to it having the trait called Shapechanger. But compare that to the Changeling, who is a Humanoid but has the trait called Shapechanger, and the waters muddy somewhat. So the confusion was whether or not the Changeling counts as a Humanoid, a Shapechanger, or Both.
Per JC's RAI tweet in Dec 2019, the Changeling is considered Both. Now, though, it is a Fey in addition to being a Shapechanger.
Like others said, yes...both Portentia Dran (which is a changeling, released 2016) and changeling (released 2019) have the shapechanger feature. It is a bit weird that Portentia Dran is a monstrosity, but they changed the changeling type to humanoid when they made it a player race option.
Of course it isn't... but they've got up-voting, and rules-lawyering that puts us to shame. I thought I was a big fish (i.e. I used to write the WotC D&D 4e rules forum FAQ) until I went there and became a tiny fish in a big pond.
I ran into this in today's game. I never imagined that my Sorlock could "not" polymorph, but another player and the DM said I could not. It seems really dumb to me. When I change form, I retain all of my own stats. So, if I'm a true shapechanger, I should have the stats of a Minotaur, for example, when I change into one. If a spell transforms me into a Rat, I don't think I could just revert to my Humanoid form, because I can't transform into a rat.

Please find for me where in the book(s) it shows that.
Here's a StackExchange on it.

Changeling are shapechanger in official source (Eberron) to me that suffice.
