We have a sorc in our group that is looking to get Banishment, but as we are in Ravnica there are some reserves. He thinks that any demons, fiends, celestial etc are from our plane of existence so it wouldn't be worth it to do so.
i thought that the rules of dnd are still applied. that demons, fiends etc are from another plane altogether and so would be able to be banished.
the main bad guys we are fighting seem to be devils and fiends and so i thought that would be a good spell to maybe take care of single high level creatures we may encounter.
So basically my question is this: Since we are playing out of DMs Guide to Ravnica, would banishment work on Fiends, Fey, Celestial and the like?
Banishment works on anything regardless of plane. But to answer your question: No, demons and angels are native to ravnica.
You should think of ravnica as having an etherial and astral plane and a fugue plane or plane of the dead (undead are not from here, it is a plane of no return).
On the other hand though, demons and angels do not reform in their native planes.
Yes, the Fiends, Fey, Celestial and the like are banished to a different plane of existence and they stay there. Boo hooo.
However, if they are native to the plane you are on and it sounds like they are in Ravnica, they are banished to a demiplane and are incapacitated. WARNING! They WILL reappear in one minute or less (concentration spell) in an unoccupied space on the native plane so exit stage left fast and leave the Sorc behind or set the ambush!!
I'm sure you could homebrew it that in Ravnica, demons or devils come from deep within the earth near the core of the plane, so if you banish one back to its "home plane" miles underground it works the same way as it would in regular dnd.
Or it could work with any physical distance. Maybe devils/ demons come from another planet within the plane, since Ravnica being an isolated plane says nothing about the size of the physical space inside of it. Could be that demons come to the "prime" space within the plane when summoned there by mortals. Basically, you can modify the lore to whatever makes sense.

That is a bit like saying drow get banished to the underdark (which is part of the prime material plane).
Yeah but it's a workaround for Ravnica not having a planar system. And it's more like that but if the Underdark was closer to the earth's core rather than deep underground. That might as well be another plane, given the distance and inaccessibility to mortals.
