I was wondering if there is anything like this in any of the D&D books. something that would maybe give an AC bonus, maybe attack bonus. Or maybe any kind of herbs or potions. that may have the same effect, or could be used to copy the effect. thanks
There's nothing in DnD like that besides Moodmark Paint which just shows the persons mood, doesn't give any buffs. However, any item or special ability could be flavored as markings/paint. Giving Epic Boons from the DMG out as markings is a fun way to do it.
In fact, in one the official WotC live stream games called Dice Camera Action, the DM - Chris Perkins (one of the lead story designers for DnD) - gives one of the players a boon that increases her Con score to 22. This boon is represented by intricate floral markings on her skin and it's super cool.
thanks for the info. That sounds awesome, but I was looking for more of use it and it wears off then reuse ect. I will talk to the DM I guess and see what we can come up with.
Sounds like the Mabari War Paint from the Dragon Age games.
It seems totally reasonable that pretty much any effect a magic item could grant, you could just re-skin as "oh, you learned how to apply battle woad in this pattern which does XYZ." And then just like attunement, they could wash off and re-apply their woad pattern as part of a short or long rest.
Also, this sounds great flavor-wise for a barbarian.
Cosmetic paints are part of the Disguise Kit. Take proficiency in that tool and apply your proficiency to Deception, Intimidation, Persuasion, Performance, and maybe the odd Insight roll where it applies?

Canto alla vita alla sua bellezza ad ogni sua ferita ogni sua carezza!
I sing to life and to its tragic beauty To pain and to strife, but all that dances through me The rise and the fall, I've lived through it all!
You could easily reflavor any potion as war paint! Instead of drinking the potion, you paint yourself with it to get the effects.
There's existing potions of resistance (to various damage types). A Potion of Firebreath is a thing that exists. Oil of Sharpness which gives a bonus to damage. Potion of Speed.
You could also potentially reflavor scrolls as warpaint. If it's reasonable for a party spellcaster to find a "Scroll of [some spell]", it's probably balanced for someone else to find a "War Paint of [that spell]" instead.
Thanks for all the feed backs folks. I am looking at spells and potions that could have the effects I would be looking for in the woad. And yes it is for a barbarian :)
I would also note that the Epic Boons link Jaysburn offered also has a section called Charms, which could be a good use of magically charged war paints as well.
In 3.5 one of the magazines had magic war paint that was a consumable magic item. I cant recall which magazine. If i donill try to come back and let you know.
Closest thing you can get is the (Barrier Tattoo) armor from Tasha's book. While unarmored you can get 12 + dex, 15 + dex (Max of 2), or 18 AC while attuned to these tattoos. It can entirely be possible to flavor these ad woaded tattoos across your face and chest and arms. Really great if your DM uses them.

In that case I would say just treat potions as paint. You can call things whatever you would like, flavor-wise.
