I'm looking to knock out my PC's for a small side section of a story. Is there a way I can do this without combat? (First DM session)
I thought maybe if the NPC's knocking out the group either slipped them a poison while drinking, or snuck up on them... Just anyway to knock them out without them going into combat. That is unless the NPC's fail their stealth checks.
Well does anything need to happen before the side section of the story? If not, that is how you can launch the campaign. If campaign is already in progress, then it gets more difficult. Would need to know Party level, race make-up, class arrangement, etc, especially the more levels they have, because of advantages, immunities, etc. to sleep, poison, charm, lucky saving throws, lucky checks, etc. Otherwise, break the fourth wall, say "Trust me on this" and then KO them and whisk them to when they come to.
Just have something impose the unconscious condition on them.
Could be a spell, could be a glyph, could be a tripwire with poison knockout gas or a big boxing glove on a stick smacks them in the head. No need for combat. If it's a story thing, then just do it.
I'm with Texas if its story driven then it's essentially an unavoidable cutscene. No skipping.
If you want wait till their next long rest and have whomever is taking watch take a high level sleep spell or fail their check fall asleep, or whatever. Not everything has to be RAW. More times than not a DM saves the party from themselves. Once in awhile the DM can take a few liberties...just dont do it to much.

Hello everyone,

Thank you for all responses ahead of time.

"Not all those who wander are lost"
Just be prepared for push back. If you tell them they’re KO’d, they’ll be wondering why they didn’t get a con save against that poison.
Like Pedroig said, you might want an out of character talk to assure them it’s for a good reason, and then hope they trust you.
Maybe a very high level Sleep spell? No saving throw allowed.
