Sleep, when counting hit points, specifically says that you should not count unconscious targets. It also says that undead and creatures that are immune to charmed are immune to the spell. Do the immune targets still count for purposes of "Creatures within 20 feet of a point you choose within range are affected in ascending order of their current hit points" or are they bypassed? e.g. there are two kobolds (7 hp each) and a wounded skeleton (6 hp) and I affect 17 hp worth of creatures. Do I put both kobolds to sleep, or does the sleep only hit the skeleton and the first kobold (having no effect on the skeleton and putting the kobold to sleep).
This might be nit-picking but the spell specifically says you ignore unconscious creatures so I would say you would still start with the Skeleton but just subtract 0 HP. This could matter if the Skeleton had some ability that activated when it was a target of a spell (target was due to lack of a better word. I know Sleep doesn't target a creature like Fire bolt does).
The spell itself is not that strong. It basically takes out people that are weak or about to die anyway. Except at a couple early levels, it's really about capturing people without having to kill them more than anything else.
I see no reason to weaken it by wasting the hitpoints on those immune.
