I think some of the confusion may come in whether or not you consider a shield a weapon. D&D 5E generally doesn't consider shields to be weapons, even with Shield Master it only allows you to shove people with your shield.
But I contend that anyone that doesn't consider a shield a weapon just hasn't been hit by one hard enough.
Using an object not intended as a weapon or using a weapon in an unintended way both count as Improvised Weapons and a shield bash could deal 1d4 damage, or more if the GM decides. Tavern Brawler grants proficiency with Improvised Weapons.
But to circle back. Would wielding an Improvised Weapon as a second implement disqualify you from the Dueling Fighting Style? Would using only one Improvised Weapon and nothing in your other hand allow you to use the Dueling Fighting Style? If only proper weapons disqualify you, does the feat only work with proper weapons?

To me an object is only a makeshiftImprovised Weapons when used in this way but is otherwise not a melee weapon itself, meaning you should gain +2 bonus to damage rolls from Dueling Fighting Stylewhen attacking with a Melee weapon while holding a shield or frying pan in your other hand for example. But wouldn't when attacking with a shield or frying pan and no weapon in your other hand.
As DM i'd also allow weapon equivalent such as a table leg resembling a club enought to function and be treated as one to also benefit from Dueling Fighting Style.

That's how I would rule it as well, but the reuse of the word "weapon" opens RAW to doubt.
