My very first character was Avon Thormundhr. He was a Human Ranger who hailed from a small village outside the capitol city of Lunderburg. He would join a Minotaur named Asger Leadshot and would go one a search for a farmer's child, only to be captured by a great witch who wanted to be immortal and the only way she could was through capturing a human with a long family bloodline of kings who used to rule in the second age of Taurenil, that's when Avon discovered he was the decendent of the first High King of Arenol in Taurenil. his good friend Asger Leadshot would manage to help him escape and thus was the beginning of our campaign... Now I have had over 10 different characters from different games and now I play an Elf of Mirkwood from the Adventures in Middle-Earth 5e campaign DMed by my older brother. Yes, I'm an absolute Tolkien Hobbit and LOTR lore nerd!
Must have been about 30 years ago, think it was an AD&D edition but can't remember which. I created a thug (fighter/thief) called Galen. He was just used as a tool to learn the game, so had basically no background and after a short campaign to around level 5, he retired.
My first character isn't one I'm particularly proud of, but here we go.
She was a human fighter, from a nation that had a long history of warfare with its neighbors, but had recently after generations, found peace. Growing up with stories of acts of heroism in war etc, but with no more war to seek glory or recognition in now, many youths including my character left their homeland to become mercenaries or adventurers to try and seek that glory elsewhere.
She ended up becoming a follower of the goddess of death in the setting she was in, becoming a sort of undead hunter with a homebrewed subclass the DM made for her.
That’s a cool character story. Why do you say not proud? D&D doesn’t have to be all unicorn farts and sunshine.
Guess I didn't phrase that well. Conceptually it wasn't a bad character but more the personality/actual character of the character I could never really get down right and kind of felt bland and uninteresting as a person, kind of hard to explain but I've had a lot more fun with subsequent characters.
I just saw the character on the phone and its so bad lol

I started out by making a Tiefling warlock of the demogorgon, thinking it was the stranger things version.
Just like how my original campaign revolved around demons...
I had very unconventional first choices.
Yikes XD.
I always worry my character's going to somehow align themself with the bad guys since my brother made a Dragonborn Bard for a Hoard of the Dragon Queen campaign.
But not going to lie that Character sounds like it would be so fun to play! I love stranger things and now I kinda want to play something like that haha (even if it's not the same demogorgon).
I'm currently revamping that campaign, and I looked at my old map.
It was depressing.
Three deserts, a demon and cultist infested mountain, a lava river, a haunted castle, a village constantly under attack from undeads, and a random forest.
Lol, that's some kind of map XD. I can't say mine were much better when I started either.
Update! That map also had:
Another desert completely populated by undead.
And the forest turned out to be the home of a murderous fey.
It was in AD&D 2nd Edition, I was a freshman in high school, and the character was Astos Wight.
He was a Lawful Evil mage with a Chaotic Evil fighter brother named Alexander played by one of my best friends. We played those characters in an evil campaign for years, forming The Wight Empire in Forgotten Realms, totally cheating to make the most badass castles and armies, and doing all the stupid fun things you do when you first start out in gaming. Eventually our gaming group split into two factions for the Wight Wars and we spent every weekend for months scheming against each other and trying to out evil each other. It was incredibly dumb, and so much fun at the same time.
I've actually remade Astos in 5e as a necromancer, just for the heck of it, and am pretty happy with the results.
7 year old me creating a copper dragonborn named Jeff. A barbarian who was exiled from his tribe when he "bonked his head" in a raid and has no idea who he is. It was so funny to look back at this and remember how fun it was to play this with my dad.

Oh my gosh! This melted my heart- and I'm a semi-grown man!

My first character was (please don't judge me) I had just read Dune) Maud'ib, a black Dragonborn CE druid. He never lasted beyond level 1, I don't even have his character sheet.

My first character was a Wizard in 2nd Ed, we were running the Night Below campaign. I don't remember if there was much for a backstory at all for him or even what his name was (it's been a little while lol). My firends and I were largely murderhobo's. The absolutely best thing I did with him was killing a Dragon by forcing him to fly into a bunch of villagers with pikes (my idea) when he crit failed the roll on the spell I cast (idr what spell it was either lol). My buddy who was DMing was flabbergasted it actually worked and gave me bonus XP for it. My other buddy had the dragon skinned so he could have Dragon scale mail created for his cleric.
Sadly, my wizard died a final death (I failed a save on a Wish spell) before we even entered the Underdark. He was a blast to play though, even if weak.
My first Character was a thief , I roleplayed in my first adventure White Plume Mountain , after gaining experience points to second level , I tried him in the Tomb Of Horrors , coming out of the dungeon with second degree burns he survived , years later he was killed in a battle in the Ice - Wind Dale campaign , through the years I have collected a vault of treasure , the original advanced dungeons and dragons and forgotten realms , one day I will put them up for sale , Olin Warhammer signing out.
My first was a two handed fighter. A lizardman named Skullcrusher. I didn't have the greatest story since it was my first but I said he had fallen in disgrace to his tribe and the chieftain had exiled him because he refused to kill unarmed villagers. The ones that fought with weapons he had no qualm about cleaving them in two but when the tribe wanted to kill the women and children he refused because he saw no honor in their deaths. Wasn't the first time he had stood up to the chieftain and when this happened the chieftain took the opportunity to denounce him. He sentenced him to die but Skullcrusher fought them off and escaped. In doing so he had to confront and kill his father. Who upon the command of the chieftain took part in attempting to kill Skullcrusher. He hid his grief well though and consoled himself by taking more and more deadlier deeds to prove his worth to anyone that would lend an ear. Probably more to the fact he was searching for a deed or quest that would eventually lead to his death in a glorious battle that would make his life worth its existence and put his tribe to shame for denouncing him. He knew he would get the last laugh and regain his honor in blood.
Loved that group I played with at the time. Ah the memories...
