One of my characters is undergoing a coming of age trial as a dragon. *They are a half dragon HB species.* They are undergoing the trials as we speak, they have had their wits and morality tasted a few times but I was hoping to brain storm some more ideas. Ideally I could use 3-5 more solid miniature encounters or tied in dungeons *I can make these if necessary so dont be afraid to go big with the ideas.
Party is composed of 6 level 7 with a good mix martial and magical but only one healer.
The setting is a mist covered probably illusion filled mountain the mist containing the roars of dragons and forcing the PCs back to the trial.
Currently the party has had an encounter with a strange old lady requesting weird undead hallucinatory fish. A statue of Bahamut presenting them with the choice to worship or ignore. (The players mostly chose worship) A kobold village under attack by fire elementals stealing their water (The PCs chose to defeat the elementals to save the Kobolds drinking water supply) A Tuckers Kobold style goblin encounter with danger at every turn.
Upcoming there will be an encounter with an opposing colour dragon which they need help. A trial in a fight against worms in sulfur fields A large mural depicting the history of dragons A mausoleum style building which the PC in question will be classically presented with a copy of themselves which will challenge their fears. A boss encounter not actually tied to the trial but still a danger of the mountain to be overcome as part of the trial
What sort of dragon are they, and what sort of things do those dragons hold to be important in your world?
For example, in the standard fluff, a Red Dragon prizes gold above all other things. Presenting a half-red-dragon with a choice between saving someone and a horde of gold, any red dragons will consider them unworthy if they choose to save the person instead of taking the gold. Presenting them with an innocent person and some gold on a see-saw teetering over a lava pool would be an option - they can only save one.
It would certainly add to the decision making to give them dragon-like choices and hero-like choices. Basically saying "are you a hero, or are you a dragon?". Do the dragons favour the greater good and consider themselves above being held accountable for the collateral damage of their choices? If so, then give them a trolley problem - the trolley will kill 5 of your people, or you can kill one person yourself to save the 5. do nothing, and the 5 deaths aren't your fault. kill 1 person, and 1 death and 5 survivors are your fault.
How are the trials proving that the person is worthy of coming of age as a half dragon? Perhaps they need to strike a balance of answers, to prove that they hold the values of both dragon and their other half.
They are a silver half dragon, however chromatics and metallic and gem dragons to some extent arent set within this universe. Their tend to alignments are a little more loose. A red dragon as you said might have an inclination towards greed but equally may choose to pursue it by any number of non evil methods.
The trials themselves are very much a your decisions shape the dragon they are, not defined by the nature alignment or colour, as the trials go on I intend to have them present harder choices, IE choose to gain things they may need to survive later at a morality consequence now. (Save this innocent or let this giant pile of magical weaponry plummet into lava sort of thing - not that simple ofc)
By choosing to worship the Bahamut statue the dragon was granted their charisma modifier as damage to their breath weapon for example and it will all tailor into dialogue and a reward which I will come up with should they survive.
I do like the dichotomy of the hero or dragon choices and they are definitely going to be an element. Ideally I am looking for some interesting encounter ideas combined with some moral choices or self sacrifice vs gain. Its just individual defined ideas I am lacking but I hope that clears up the kinda direction I am going.
