Effectively for game balance there is no special “arcane” race - if there were the vast majority of mages of all other races would be outclassed from the get go and so only that race would be mages so to allow all races an equal shot none are especially magical.
But from a logic perspective (i know its fantasy 😅) wouldnt evolution drive people to magic as magic is so much superior? Also i really dont understand why races that lifes a long time dont take the 6 years investment for each child to check if it has magic wizard style? (Becoming a wizard based on the raistlin story)? If you consider how powerful magic is only a fool would waste that potential?
And mechanically i mean we have yuanti and aaracockra which already kind of break the game balance, especially the aaracockra. An level 1 aracockra with a longbow can solo a ridicolous amount of challanges. lYuanti in a more boring way with magic resistance, but still it does not seem like Wotc care that much for power level? so a plus 1 to dc would not be so imba? I mean there are wands that grant plus 1 and i dont think they were even requiring attunement? Not that i would find that especially intersting, but so far i have not cooked up something better and dndbeyond i was not succesfull either, maybe i just used the wrong key words?
Dot, I think your mixing up 2 different things from the Forgotten Realms - Mystra’s Chosen, imbued with a portion of her power if they accept and yes one (Elminster) was/is a mage but there are others as well that are not mages. The other is the Magister ( technically under Azuth) Whose job is to spread the knowledge of the use of magic. For a long time the office did pass to a new person on the defeat of the old Magister in spell battle but this is no longer true.
Omg is this the horrible story i quote when i say dnd stories dont age well?
its like the son of a king who was a great king cause the author said so but in reality he was completly incompetent cause he lost pretty easily (as they say tell dont show?). Then the orphan gets captured by road thieves and you think shit i am not ready for that kind of book again (way of shadows far to rwalistic…), but to my suprise they take the 6 year old orphan and train him to be a sword master within a year and he is know the leader of this cut throats? Wtf
then he says fellow noble knight road thieves i want to improve my tieve ability and goes alone in a big city and gets 20 rogue levels and a crew within 2 years with again 10 or so? Then one night hes sees to mages fight and sees his first fireball, then attacked by cultists he then repeats the fireball spell as a first atemlt ever with no training at all?!! Then i think mystra or another godess comes down and praises his awesomness and makes him a level 20 mage/cleric? If i friend has written that BS i would have suggested to quit writing. Yes i know my writing would probably be even worse but even trying to be constructive i couldnt tell you one good thing about that story and powerful mages is my favorite genre like spellmonger series, daniel black, art of the adept, mageborn, legend of the archmage…
Mystras realm the dweomerheart iirc is the home of angels indeed (and the Inevitables). So, a mystran aasimar is well possible.
I'm pretty sure mystra used to keep a mortal champion walking the earth as well, a powerful chosen mage... Not sure if the deal was, something like beating them with magic would make you the new one? Can't remember, but either way, you can definitely go the aasimar path with tashas swapping the bonus especially so. It's a bit unusual at least and gives you some extra powers to use like darkvision, two resistances and a little bit of healing.
Protector subrace is probably better since you can get some flying out of it.
The scourge subrace is also nice. I've played a scourge aasimar, celestial warlock. Be aware of collateral damage. You deal half your level as radiant within 10 feet. I've hurt allies with this by accident. And let's just say that nonfighting NPCs should stay away. I mightve had an accident trying to save a child and forgetting my burning presence. (it's ok, just cost me 300g diamond for revivify).
Both of them can also add their level as radiant damage to one target/turn when using their special ability which is nice.
Fallen aasimar ability works based on your charisma so it's less useful for a wizard.
Thanks i have never played an aasimar myself due to my feeling about clerics in this kind of religious system (throw away tools for the gods with a temper of a three year old), but i have seen other people often enough. I think gale from bg3 was as well her champion and lover untill he fell out of favor? Did not finsih the EA yet. Want to wait for the completion. Else you have to play the first chapter like 7 times and for that i dont get enough game time having three children and a job.😅

That sounds like some one told you the story and screwed it up horribly- here is the Wikipedia link for Elminster his basic story is that he is the son of an ancient king’s brother. When the king, his family including the brother and his wife (Elminster’s mother) are killed by the mages the king hired to help him he develops a hatred of all things magical and tries to raise a rebellion becoming a fighter - but only level 1. He quickly realizes that revolt isn’t going to succeed and sends it underground escaping to the capitol in disguise under an alias where he tries to work as a thief ( reaching a whopping L2) stealing from the magelords and their supporters but quickly discovers they are after him still and he tries to flee. At that point Mystra offers him an option to become a cleric of her and learn about the “other side of magic” in that way. When he agrees she turns him into a her fulling disguising her so she escapes and spends time learning about Mystra as a female cleric reaching a whopping L3. Eventually “she” is returned to He and begins as a L1 mage and only after years of training and leveling does he return to his home kingdom where he takes on his parents killers killing them in spell battle and freeing his family’s kingdom only to abdicate to continue following Mystra as one of her chosen. As such he has many further adventures rising to extremely high level over a thousand + year life. Mystra’s chosen are the “arcane” group you are phantasizing about bout they are strictly DM tools in Forgotten Realms campaigns. So too really we’re the Eladrin and Sarrukh of earlier versions that were effectively Cr10+ monsters. of the player races I would say that the Eladrin elf, Genasi and Assimar are your best choices.

I just checked it was 2 years ago and usually my memory is not so bad? It was this audiobook? I cant relisten to it cause like all books i find horrible i gave it back. It was written in 2013, maybe a retelling of the story where the author thought he needs some more epic backstory? I can imagine that in game terms he only got 1 level in fighter and 1 level in rogue but that is certainly not how the author described it. Even the wikipedia summary says that he was called the dark when he was a tieve? He was like 10? Does that sound like a level 1 rogue before pueberty? I imagine theya are falled boy give me the money you stole or i cut you up. I admit could be my memory exatrorsting the experience but based on my memory it was one of the worst books i wver listened to. And saddly that applies to all stories i have tried so far. Thus probably my lack in lore in dnd.

Then he calls a page and throws the rock and the page catches it. then he asks how is this possible the brightest studends cant figure thst out but a page can do that within a second. There is a hidden part in our brain that has imense capabilties. Which is true when sombody throws a rock our mind caliclates that in a milosecond and moves our hand in the right spot? 🤯 remeber how many v, t, a, s and m and other information this formula needs to be calculate? but i mean a lot people probably found that book horrible and they may have liked elminsters tory. Genasi in general or is there a special kind currently not yet in 5e? Cause water genasi is actually one of the three races i mostly play when meerfolk (mtg i think ishikan or soemthing like it) is not allowed.

There can be a few inconsistencies at times, like consider you can pick the mercenary or soldier background or similar things and still not pick the fighter class, which even at level 1 could seem like it wouldnt fit.
As for elminster I didn't read any book about it but as far as I know he was the chosen of mystra only after already being one of the most powerful wizards alive.
In regards to the lore of forgotten realms there are things I don't like and some things I really like. O e of the things I find really interesting is how they actually seem to have some reason, lore wise, for the changes in the editions. Like a big great event that changes the world with each new edition if I understand it correctly.
On a similar topic of grand backstories and such I am currently playing a level 4 druid. We decided to use the forgotten realms version of the heroic chronicles which add some allies and enemies and went with two fateful moments each for fun and balance (between characters).
Of course my random rolls were completely bananas. Basically i rolled (d100) for allies and for enemies and the main ally was an archmage, the main enemy was a gold dragon. Me thinking ooooook.... And roll för fateful moments (d20). I roll one result that says I hear mystras voice whispering secrets of the weave after I survived something that should have killed me (just gives knowledge arcana and religion proficiency) then I rolled 20 and the result is that I have found out a world changing secret of some sort, plus I got the skilled feat (3 more skills). I thought about it for a while trying to figure out why this level 3 druid would be affected by all this and at first I told the DM I kinda wanted to reroll because it just felt hard to fit.
Then I came up with a idea and asked the DM if it was OK. Basically me, the archdruid(that's level 20)and a archmage of similar levels killed a God (or probably more likely the avatar of a God) and when this happened not only did I probably die but also got thrown into a random plane, same with the archmage. So, something like my soul was basically thorn apart by the backlash of being near the god/avatar dying and mystra coming down to put it back, inside my body, or maybe recreate it.
So basically the character is weak from the ordeal, hence the level 3 start, with memory loss. He remembers the archmages name in his dreams but not when waking, then all he remembers is a woman in a weird space like surrounding being swept away (likely the planeshift). And he has a feeling that he needs to find something (which is a good way to trigger adventuring). I also used the 3 extra skills from the 2nd fateful moment for more lore skills and investigation to fit with the Whispers of the weave giving me random knowledge of everything. I decided to pick feywild as the random plane I ended up in and took the fey touched feat with dissonant Whispers as the 2nd spell to again symbolize the Whispers of mystra. Also he's more dedicated to mystra than the average druid one might say. I also got to houserule that I could swap armor proficiency for a feat that works like the eldritch invocation giving mage armor at will, since I felt it fit more with the theme. The DM allows different materials for armor so I'd have no real problem getting half plate and he likes magic items so a magic half plate would be possible too, so we both felt that crippling myself with 13 base ac is fine and my loss ;)
And yeah, I left a lot of the story open for the DM to decide, it might be a different but similar event, but it feels like it actually make some sense now. I don't know why we did what we did, that's basically up to the DM, maybe mystra was involved and that's why she brought me back? I don't know. It's really the only time I can think of that I used a overpowered backstory like this, but I feel like it actually works and makes some sense. Normally I like to keep the backstory a bit more humble 😂
To dot113 regarding the druid. That sounds indeed like an intersting story. :) it also makes a lot of sense when you think about how hard most classes have to train to become a level 1 wizard or druid, but then after killing x goblins like 2 months later are suddenly level 10 at their craft and probably the best in their current area. Which makes a lot more sense when you were once an archdruid. :)
Yeah, I used that explanation as well for the possibly quick level ups and since the character is around 70, the Timeless body effect which is actually there in the background (though it honestly doesn't change anything).
I went with Shepherd, mainly because I wanted to try out a summoner + I like talking to animals ;) I picked a few crowd controll spells like entangle and spike growth but mainly wanted my combat to rely around other things fighting for me while I'm basically doing nothing, so summoner seemed good. Also one of the other characters is something of a blaster and I wanted them to feel like they did more damage and so on. I also have guidance which I use a lot out of combat and daily druidcraft for knowing the weather + I use Augury a lot, rolling those bones to see what the future brings ;)

out of curiosity what subclass did you choose?
