My character is a dragonborn who recently discovered that his ancestral line directly traces back to the last monarch of Neverwinter. During a war, the monarch fled with their heir into the Neverwinter Wood, where a dragon who serves Bahamut transfigured the heir, via something similar to True Polymorph, into a dragonborn.
I want my character to find a way to gather evidence for his ancestral line so that he can gain allies and supporters to help overthrow Dagult Neverber and rule Neverwinter for himself.
My DM has left the road to rule unpaved, free for me to try out my own ideas, but I easily get myself stumped on things like this, so where can I start?
Honestly? Just start with talking to locals. I'm sure there are at least a few who would believe you, especially if you have good persuasion. I would also try to infiltrate the castle/palace, and look for any papers/documents that could help your cause. You could also try forging papers.
However, the fact that you are now a dragon born will certainly make things way harder, since you can't use anything like paintings to help your cause.
Try doing research into fantasy stories with characters in similar scenarios. King Arthur and Aragorn from Lord of the Rings springs to mind. Daenarys - Game of Thrones, Simba from the Lion King, Henry the VII who had to defeat Richard III. Ultimately, you will probably need to find the Merlin/Gandalf (LOTR)/Nala (Lion King) character that knows the truth and can be your primary supporter. Good luck and sounds like a fun character arc.
