So I've not read much about the realms buy my DM has a sort of homebrew campaign based off the settings rules. I was wondering what some of the lore on pirates was as I intend on playing one after my wild magic Sorcecer dies/retires. Any places I can go to for something to build a PC's background?
For me the greatest question for any seafarer in Faerun is "what is my relationship with Umberlee?".
Are you almost devout in your offerings to her before you set out to sea, or do you make offerings only out of fear or habit, or do you neglect her and trust another deity to keep you safe, or are you indifferent, or do you foolishly dare to challenge her storms with no higher power by your side?
That is a really cool idea. I've never been interested in the religious aspects of D&D, but I forget the deities are real and therefore hard to ignore. I will definately incorperating that into my character. I had and idea that she was stolen as a girl and married to a pirate Captain before escaping which could mean she has a love/hate relationship with Umberlee as she was stolen by the sea.
Pirates of the Fallen Stars may be written in the 2E era of D&D, but these books were always full of "fluff" material that makes for great backgrounds and adventure ideas.

I've just got it and can see there is plenty in there that will absolutely help me build a character despite being 2E.
Starting from those points, you can go as far down the rabbit hole as you want. I'm particularly fond of genasi pirates, personally, and have used them many times in my Realms adventures.

I am one with the Force. The Force is with me.

Sea of fallen stars 2e book is a good option for fluff as well
So if we are talking Forgotten Realms there are a number pirate like groups (some of which are mentioned above).
Enjoy!
