Hello! I was thinking about running a Shadowfell campaign, and came across a problem. Does anyone know any lore about the shadowfell, or any creatures that are native to/ would be in there?
From recent times I believe the Shadowfell once was the Plane of the Shadow, however now mirrors the prime material like the feywild. During the Spell plague the dark goddess Shar entwined it with the negative energy plane to create the Shadowfell. Crossings into the Shadowfell are found in dark places, like a shadow under an eroded sculpture of a twisted god, behind a tapestry depicting a sorrowful scene, or a open grave where people have been weeping the loss of a loved one.
The city of Neverwinter has a reflection in the Shadowfell called Evernight, a city of cracked stone and homes of rotten wood. Its roads made of trampled grave dust. Like the rest of the fell, the sky is grey and a bone chilling wind blows.
I think another bigger city called Gloomwrought, the city of Midnight, and the deity Raven Queen lives their?
Even a flying city from the ancient kingdom of the Netherese floats about in there.
The Shadowfell if mostly populated by un-dead, who feed off of sorrow and grief. Things like Sorrowspawn demons anything that has Shadow in the beginning of it name.. Humans who live there are known as Shadar-Kai who are changed by the negative energy of the Shadowfell. Let your imagination go wild on what lives there as long as its dark and shadowy. Drow merchants, Shadow Dragon overlords, a Monk monastery of the way of the Shadow..
The lands are mostly grey, however some one lighting a torch or casting a fireball, the illumination would draw the normally docile inhabitence toward them like a gun shot draws zombies.
Its a reflection of what ever world your playing in normally, just darker. A place necromancers strive to enter, dark cultists perform rituals to gain power, where ghosts who cry about lost loved ones, spirits wale over haunted memories.
Don't forget that it also will twist and corrupt the PC's over time. The longer they stay the more they are effected.
SHADOWFELL DESPAIR
d6 Effect
1-3 Apathy, The character has disadvantage on death saving throws and Dex checks for Initiative, gains flaw "I don't believe I can make a difference to anyone or anything"
4-5 Dread. The character has disadvantage on all saving throws and gains flaw " I am convinced This place is going to kill me"
6 Madness. The character has disadvantage on ability checks and saving throws that use INT, WIS, CHR and gains flaw "I cant tell what is real anymore".
So a fun place to visit and even nicer place to stay. Perfect for a Holiday!

Haven’t used this account in forever. Still a big fan of crawling claws.

There are a few natives to the Shadowfell.
Ephemeras - Creatures that were twisted by the Shadowfell, multi-headed lizards to plane shifting trees called umbral banyan.
Nightshades - Undead creatures that are part dead and part darkness whose Intelligence and spell casting are something to fear.
Shadar-Kai - The Shadowfell version of Eladrin.
Shades - Humanoids whose soul was taken and replaced with essence of shadow.
Shadows - The Shadowfell version of ghosts.
Shadow Creatures - Shadow version of creatures on the Material Plane.
Shadow Mastiffs - Giant monstrosity dogs made of shadow whose teeth are viciously sharp and travel in packs across the Shadowfell.
I see SHadar Kai,Mastiffs and Shadows, but can’t find Shades, Shadow Creatures, or Ephemeras. Where are those?
