Any ideas on how to transport an entire party to and from a Dream/Nightmare dimension. The gist of the story is that nightmares from universe x have somehow spilled into the PCs/adventurer's world (universe y). The PCs/adventurers need to enter this Dream dimension and stop the nightmares universe x from escaping into their world (universe Y). Once in the Dream dimension, the adventurers meet npcs from universe x that are trying to stop nightmares from Pcs/adventurers world (universe y) from spilling into their world.
So, any cool ideas on how to get my group into the Dream dimension, and back out?
My first idea is that something caused a tear in reality/time/space etc... Once the anomaly is located a spell/magic item or some kind of astral projection could get them in.
My other idea is that the party is unknowingly in the vicinity of the anomaly and are sucked by mistake.
Everybody sleeps. Just start them off in the dream dimension and don't tell them it's a dream. Everything looks normal except for one or two tiny things. Then it gets weirder and weirder. If any of the PCs get killed, they wake up back in Universe Y and have to try to help their friends fix the anomaly in the physical world.
The spell Dream already allows characters to enter other people's dreams, so you could use that for guidance/inspiration of how it could work.
Perhaps the PCs are contacted by a circle of wizards who have already determined the source of the nightmares. The wizards perform a ritual - a beefed-up version of Dream, essentially - that allows the PCs to enter the dream world, but their bodies remain in Universe Y, leaving them vulnerable. (This could be a great source of drama/tension.)
