So i have this idea in my head of a half elf character. Ill be the first to admit that im the kind of person who usually sticks to human characters and im a bit of a min maxer
I was playing with the idea of a drow half elf but the issue is that i dont want grey or purple skin or white hair. I have an idea for how he looks which has brown hair and human style caucasian skin. Kdea being that dads a drow mums human and he takes largely after mum in terms of looks or vice versa i havent settled on that yet
Will this make any sense or are the elf features quite strong in terms of being passed down and he would almost certainlt have the hair or skin?
Depends. It's like all humans. If you have a black dad and white mum, you could turn out with white, black or anything in between coloured skin. Your mum might have blonde hair, but your dad has brown. You could have either.
They might have some elven traits, such as a grace when they walk or very pointy ears and a small build, and are incapable of growing body and facial hair. I wouldn't be mad at you as a DM, as long as you add in some elven traits (not just pointy ears) I would be ok. No half elf stats but they're just humans.

There is the way everyone says it, talk to your DM about it or I suppose you can go for the Tiefling variant route (still up to your DM though) where your character looks human for the most part with very small features that shows their origin which could be slightly pointed ears, strange eye colors (drow like), bit dark skin or/and have few white hair strands.
Though from what i know lore wise, half elves do have are bit hard to discern without seeing their striking feature which is the slightly pointed ears since to humans they look like elves and to elves they look like humans.

Always remember, Half-Elves can come from a human parent and an elven parent, but they could also come from half-elven parents. So your character could come from half-elven parents that both favored the human parent in a previous generation, and this would suppress the 'elven' physical traits. So you can make the Drow-Human half-elf combination look mostly human without getting into a genetics dissertation.

On Eberron, there are Half-Elven families who have been such for generations, called the Khoravar meaning “Children of Khorvaire” because that’s the continent where the half-elves first developed. They mix back with full humans and occasionally full elves, which means the “half” might be only a quarter or an eighth. The original author of Eberron is also a supporter of players having freedom to alter the flavor elements of their characters while keeping the mechanics stable, and I tend to agree. If you want to play a half-drow who ‘passes’ as human, that’s your story to explore. The potential for fantasy creature racism doesn’t figure into mechanical game balance for 5e (if it ever did in previous editions), and it really doesn’t make much sense in worlds which have a huge variety of sapient races which may all be helpful or hostile in different ways and at different times. There’s also the fey ancestry which makes elves adapt to their environments (sea elves, underground elves, wood elves, etc.) and many can change characteristics like gender. Maybe your half-elf inherited enough of the fey traits to alter their looks in small ways.

In Forgotten Realms there are also half-elf populations that have existed for many generations and who no longer consider them half-anything. In the Yuirwood in Aglarond, there are half-woodelves and half-highelves, who call themselves simply Yuir with a few half-drow among them. There skin colors have both elven and human variants and they consider themselves a mixed people. In Dambrath half-drow have long been the ruling caste and are called Crinti there.
Alternatively you could take custom lineage to reflect a certain mix of human, surface elf and drow blood.

Talk to your DM but be careful so as not to sound like you want to play a half drow without actually being a half drow.
