Hi all, so I'm thinking of running a one-shot in Tymanther for a dragonborn party member, just to flesh out the backstory of the character.
I'm a big fan of dragonborn/Vayemniri lore recently, having completely read the Brimstone Angels novels (which are awesome by the way), so I felt like I should really give my player a taste of Tymanther, just to understand where he comes from, what culture they have, and what his people go through in their war with returned Untherans.
I realise however, that I can't find any record of what the climate and terrain is like in Tymanther and Eastern Faerun. The dragonborn city of Djerad Thymar in Tymanther seems to be beneath South-Eastern coast of the Sea of Fallen stars, about 120-150 miles from the Black Ash Plain and the Smoking mountains. In fourth edition, it was also about 360 miles north of the Shaar Desolation, which no longer seems to be on 5e maps, but 5e also shows Djerad Thymar to be just across the river Alamber from the Green Lands, which is supposedly highly fertile, being the Tymanthers "breadbasket", growing barley, flax, rice and sesame seeds.
The ruins of Unthalass were supposedly were infested by sphinxes, buildings of the region famously include (I think flat-topped) pyramids. The Mulhorandi pantheon are basically ancient the Egyption pantheon, whereas I'm not sure if the Untheric pantheon resemble any real-world pantheon.
At this point, I'm not sure whether the Tymanther region itself is a desert, an arid steppe or somewhere green and temperate. What real country should I be taking inspiration from for dragonborn Tymanther? Do you think it would it resemble somewhere like ancient Egypt or maybe Arabia? Or might it look somewhere like the Aztec culture and terrain?
Based on the location and pantheon, it seems to be based on ancient Babylon and Mesopotamia (or maybe a slightly modernized version). Think Old Testament. I’d go with that!
