Hi all, I recently came by an item which will allow me to cast the dream spell on both willing, and non-willing targets. Does anyone have any creative uses for this? Just looking to see what sort of options I can come up with on this one.
Maybe a punishment? There was an episode of Star Trek Voyager where someone was convicted of murder, and the last memories of the murdered man were artificially implanted, forcing the supposed murderer to experience the last, terrifying moments of his victim’s life, every fourteen hours or so. Such an effect could be replicated with a little homebrew magic sprinkled on top of the spell/item.
In theory, you could try to use it to reform a criminal by attempting to create guilt feelings through their dreams.
It could be an information-gathering tool, although that would probably require persuasion, deception, and/or intimidation checks.
It could be a healing tool, for helping those with mental illness, PTSD flashback nightmares, cursed nightmares, etc.
And I’m sure there’s some perverted weirdo in your game world who would pay to have someone break into their dreams for recreational purposes!

I live with several severe autoimmune conditions. If I don’t get back to you right away, it’s probably because I’m not feeling well.
An extremely morally-questionable one is on the Cleric, Paladin, or Warlock. Make them have a dream where their patron/god tells them to do something advantageous for you, they will believe that it is a sign, and probably do it for you.
A downside of this is that the god/patron may or may not be mad at you for impersonating them, and could prooooooooooooobably smite you for something like that. Use at your own risk lol
In Volo's it says that when a beholder dreams of seeing itself in a mirror it makes new beholders that share the same ethos/goals/personality as the original. There are some other dreams that can cause this also, but I'm away from book right now.
True polymorph into a beholder and have your buddy use the item on you.
There are so many possibilities. Works best on superstitious people.

Give someone a dream where they can find a hidden treasure in the forest (where you are hiding) and then use that opportunity to rob and kill them.
To further this idea, in general the idea of giving someone a dream to meet you in a certain place is very useful, even better if combined with another spell: Modify Memory.
Picture this. You have a dream that your family is in peril if you don't pay tribute to a powerful archfey in the nearby woods. You bring the tribute there and witness this archfey in all its terrible power, and know that although you're safe now, the archfey will return to ask for more in the future.
Except, it wasn't an archfey, it was a PC robbing the guy & then modifying their memory so they *remembered* it being this powerful entity.
This is just one example but with this concept those two spells can cause all sorts of shenanigans, combining dreams with waking memories to completely mess with a subjects mind and perceptions.

Thank you!

Give the king a dream where a bunch of adventurers (looking suspiciously like your lot) fulfill a prophecy and save it from an evil only they can.
Give the king a dream where his advisors are trying to kill him. Works extra well if he's a known paranoid.
Give a man a dream where a demon lord is communicating to him in his sleep and the only way to appease him is to murder his whole family.
Pose as someones dead parent and tell them to give the inheritance to [said child] or the helpful stranger who saved their farm.
Pose as someones dead parent and tell them to bet on a losing horse (stolen from order of the stick)
Give someone a dream where they can find a hidden treasure in the forest (where you are hiding) and then use that opportunity to rob and kill them.

You are still in wizard school..... you suddenly remember you have a huge abjuration test and never studied...also you are in your underwear....
Or for a monk or barbarian..."you're in public but instead of being mostly unclothed You....Are...Wearing..Heavy...Armor."
Creative uses in warfare, sent to General: (Best used with repeated uses)
Where he starves. Follow it up with an attack on their food supplies.
Undead attacks. when you have an army of living creatures. How much resources wasted on silver weapons and holy water.
To the King before warfare: Naval battles. Followed by an overland invasion.
What is the item?
Greed is my lever, Fear my servent and Death my only friend.
Join the Grammer Cult.
