I have a player that is running a trickster cleric with Neutral Evil and Shar as her deity. I'm focusing on secrets rather than the more evil principles of the deity, and also providing the ritual progression so I provide communication /reward for the player. The Lady of Secrets Despite Shar’s evil alignment and her being the goddess of night, darkness, and loss, there is another side to the goddess, a side that is actually beneficial. She is very fond of secrets.
Player Rituals
Early levels - Nightfall Every night followers of Shar performed the Nightfall, a ritual in which they received instructions from the goddess if they revealed a secret worthy and one that held special meaning. Multiple minor secrets might be deemed worthy. DM discretion. Provide clues whispered to the player. Shar: “I am fond of this secret but everyone has secrets, find more to please the lady.”
Reward: Title - Sister/Brother Night. Item: Dark Moon skill (homebrew). People who favor Shar can spot whether people have secrets or not. Their shadows are thicker than those of others, they even have a shadow when there shouldn't be one, maybe this shadow is cast by the Dark Moon, the symbol of Shar in the heavens. Thus, the shadow is also cast in another direction than the shadow cast by the sun.
Mid-levels - Coming of the lady. Coming of the Lady This special ritual at night requires a follower of Shar with the Sister Night title to commit an act of retribution or depravity in Shar's name. Whisper the accomplishment in utter darkness and alone to your deity on the same day/night of the deed. DM to provide whispers on the act. Killing is not required but will count. If the kills are enemy NPCs, the number count must be much higher on kills. Player must be made aware they require to whisper to the victim that their death is in Shar's name. therefore, kills must be made at close quarters so player is able to invoke shar's name during death.
Reward: Title - Mother/Father Night. Item: Shadowfell brand tattoo (magic item) Magical Tattoo of the dark moon that offers dark vision and the wearer soundless movement. Advantage on stealth checks.
Upper levels - Kiss of the lady The Kiss of the Lady was considered the most important rite of the faith and is received when a secret from CR creature of 5 or more is whispered from a follower with the coming of the lady title to Shar in darkness. DM discretion if the secret is deemed worthy.
Reward: Player has Title Choice depending on if they choose to believe the heresy or not: Dark Heart - player doesn't believe the heresy and retains alignment and spells. Dark Moon Heresy - Fissures erupted within the church, surrounding the Dark Moon heresy, the belief that Shar and Selûne were two aspects of the same goddess. Ask your DM: Player can change their alignment to Neutral Good. Players can reroll to a domain fitted to Selune if required. alternatively, DM can provide custom spells to players that fit Selune (light/fire) spells and swap them with players' current spell list. think channel divinity or high spells.
Eyes of Charming (magic item). These crystal lenses fit over the eyes ( they will look like the dark moon symbol but not too easy to acertain\ unless close inspection). They have 3 charges. While wearing them, you can expend 1 charge as an action to cast the charm person spell (save DC 13) on a humanoid within 30 feet of you, provided that you and the target can see each other. The lenses regain all expended charges daily at dawn.
