This build would probably be fine for Decent into Avernus, but once you get into Above Average into Avernus and Good into Avernus, you'll probably start falling behind. Just keep that in mind, in case your DM plans on taking the campaign that far.
Hey mate, thanks for the reply.
I am note entirely clear what you mean by Above Average Decent Into Avernus. This campaign goes from level 1-13
T'was but a joke. You refer to the module as Decent into Avernus, but it is actually Descent into Avernus. Whereas descent means to move downwards, decent is a synonym for okay. I played off of this, making the joke that if there were a Decent into Avernus, there would surely also be an Above Average into Avernus and a Good into Avernus, as "above average" and "good" are both on the same descriptive spectrum as "decent."

Look at what you've done. You spoiled it. You have nobody to blame but yourself. Go sit and think about your actions.
Don't be mean. Rudeness is a vicious cycle, and it has to stop somewhere. Exceptions for things that are funny. Go to the current Competition of the Finest 'Brews! It's a cool place where cool people make cool things.

Games like this where you know you'll be dealing with one specific enemy type is great for playing Ranger for Favored Enemy. Getting Advantage on tracking and all Intelligence checks for recalling information will be a huge boon. If you use one of your many opportunities to get expertise in Nature or Arcana, even if you don't have a particularly good INT score you'll be able to know just about anything about any devil you come across.
Hello bud.
This is an interesting point. However, I don't know how I could RP that in. How would my character know about devils enough for them to be his fav enemy?
For the most part, I'd like to RP and for it to make sense that I can do or know things.
You just have to give them a backstory that involves Devils. Like... maybe his Mother owes a debt to a Devil that has ruined her life over time and he's spent his life looking for a way out of their contract, which resulted in him researching Devils in general. Maybe he had a childhood friend who was secretly a Devil that was manipulating him and he was nearly sacrificed as part of some ritual... you could even say that he was rescued by someone who became his mentor, and is the person who taught him the arts of being a Gloomstalker Ranger.
Magic Weapon is part of the Ranger Additional spells Optional Feature in Tasha's. To see it on the list you have to activate the "Optional Features" option in the character sheet Home (or main config of the character). Then on the Class tab there should be an "Optional Feature Manager" where you need to activate the "Additional Ranger Spells". With all that you can select Magic Weapon and the other spells for the Ranger.
I know you said Tashas is available but is polite to ask your DM if that optional feature is available for the campaing.
For the other part of the suggestions.... Yes Rogue 1, Ranger 5 cold be the "optimal" way to get: more prof and expertise, and Extra Attack from Ranger 5th the main feature you are after. Since you ask for how to make sense fo getting Favored Enemy: Devils (or fiends) for your character it is entirely your choice, but the Adventure offers many player options in Baldur's Gate that can be use as an RP/backstory way to choose them. Or you can slow your progression a little and get to rogue 2 or 3 before choosing ranger, is not going to be bad at all.
Im entirely on your side on choosing the feature in that way, as I do the same: in one campaing my Elf Ranger Bounty Hunter had Gnolls and Elfs as favored enemies at 1st becuase those made sense: bounty hunter living in an elven nation and having a "big gnoll tribe" in the borders were I grew up... if we ever retake the campaing and reach 6th my next favored enemy will be either Demon or Dragon because of the way the campaing has gone (or maybe Fey... who knows).

Ah... I'm a dummy! I didnt scroll down far enough to see that optional feature lol Thanks bud. Yeah, I'll speak with the DM
Yeah, I just prefer for things to make sense for my character. At least, as much as I can. I assume you're the same, but it just nice to RP all this in. It makes the campaign/character more meaningful - for me at least
