I'm not sure if this has been brought up before, but i can't seem to find an exact answer to my question, so here it is.
Im making a Fighter, Eldritch Knight. At 2nd lvl fighters get Tacticl Mind, where if they fail an ability check they can use thier 2nd Wind to roll a d10 and add that to the check. Now if you were concentrating on a spell and you took damage, you would have to make a check to maintain concentration. Could you use Tactical Mind to basicall assure a pass?
Based on everything im finding and reading some things say it would be a Constitution Save, but would concentration be an ability check, to maintain "the ability to concentrate"?
Everything below is pulled straight from the books. My main arguement with it is that a Constitution Save or any "save" would be against something directly trying to do you harm. Whereas an Ability check is you testing your ability to do something.
Ability Check
An ability check is a D20 Test that represents using one of the six abilities—or a specific skill associated with an ability—to overcome a challenge. See also chapter 1 (“D20 Tests” and “Proficiency”).
A saving throw — also called a save — represents an attempt to resist a spell, a trap, a poison, a disease, or a similar threat. You don’t normally decide to make a saving throw; you are
forced to make one because your character or monster is at risk of harm.
Ability Check Examples
Ability
Make a Check To...
Strength
Lift, push, pull, or break something
Dexterity
Move nimbly, quickly, or quietly
Constitution
Push your body beyond normal limits
Intelligence
Reason or remember
Wisdom
Notice things in the environment or in creatures’ behavior
Charisma
Influence, entertain, or deceive
Ability Checks
An ability check represents a creature using talent and training to try to overcome a challenge, such as forcing open a stuck door, picking a lock, entertaining a crowd, or deciphering a cipher. The DM and the rules often call for an ability check when a creature attempts something other than an attack that has a chance of meaningful failure. When the outcome is uncertain and narratively interesting, the dice determine the result.
Ability Score and Modifier
A creature has six ability scores—Strength, Dexterity, Constitution, Intelligence, Wisdom, and Charisma—each of which has a corresponding modifier. Add the modifier when you make a D20 Test with the corresponding ability or when a rule asks you to do so. See also chapter 1 (“The Six Abilities”).
Saving throws and ability checks are different things.
At level 9, Fighters get a feature called "Indomitable" that allows re-rolling a failed saving throw, which would work on a Concentration save. The 2024 version adds your Fighter level to the re-rolled result.
Well, whether or not you can take V-Human for War Caster depends on if your table is allowing 2014 PHB races or not. 2024 Humans only get to pick from Origin feats.

Technically the Variant Human from 2014 is now homebrew since Human was reprinted in 2024. The only "races" from the 2014 PHB that are still available RAW are Half-Elf and Half-Orc as they were not reprinted.

Legacy, not homebrew. They’re compatible with the 2024 update with one or two obvious adjustments to avoid things like double-dipping ASI’s at creation. Nothing has actually been removed from the game, up to the point that the last I knew the 2014 PHB and DMG are still for sale on Beyond.

The roll you make to maintain Concentration on a spell when damaged is very explicitly a saving throw, not an ability check, so you can't use Tactical Mind on it. See here: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/phb-2024/rules-glossary#Concentration

Unfortunately, that is the only bit of information I did not see on the topic, haha. So that is my bad and I appreciate the info.
You could use tactical mind for the Intelligence checks from using dispel magic spell or harvesting poison though.
If you're concerned about concentration, you should probably take War Caster as one of your next feats.
If you haven’t yet started a campaign you may want consider making your character a variant human and getting the war caster feat at first level.

That is new to me I have very little knowledge on the 2024 version.
