New to 5e and was thinking about creating a multi class character who's an assassin. Any suggestions on how to do this? I'm currently playing as a ranger (lvl 6) but have to say it's pretty boring?
Honestly, Assassin is more boring than Ranger. Their whole shtick revolves around the first round of combat, and after that they're pretty much just a standard Rogue.

Assassin type characters are often misconstrued as entirely introverted and shadowy, whereas the reality of it, imho, revolves around their ability to mix in with the hustle and bustle of any given crowd and either deflect suspicion entirely by way of affection from the right kinds of people or go unnoticed even in the thick of things. Develop great political status, establish nobility, become a local Bard, etc. etc. To that end I would suggest picking up a lot of social feats, utilize Disguises and get familiar with more ways to achieve assassinating a target than just utilizing your current weapons.
I am in the minority, but a Warlock/Bard multi-class could be an excellent assassin if the social skills were applied correctly. I would suggest one of those two classes to fill in, but as far as suggesting specifics, that is entirely reliant on your play-style.

This is all very interesting, but what does it have to do with the rogue subclass?

It doesn't. I inferred from his post that he wasn't necessarily talking about the Rogue subclass Assassin but instead wanted to play a character that is an assassin, based on the way he said it, so took that idea and ran with it as an alternative or fresh perspective. You don't have to take the Assassin subclass to play a character that is an assassin since it isn't mutually exclusive, just like calling someone a barbarian doesn't mean they're playing the Barbarian class.

I read it the same way. I think the OP could have used a little more clarity if they wanted to play an assassin or if they wanted to take the multiclass assassin from rogue to get rid of this kind of mix up.
I never thought of that before though that a Warlock or a Bard could make for a good assasin type character even if they were multiclassed with other things or themselves. That is a neat way to look at thing and I might try to do that and see if my dm catches on lol.
Eh, simple misunderstanding if the intent was to ask about multi-classing with Rogue. I would have remarked upon the Rogue subclass regardless pending OP clarification, but saw no harm in proffering different insight.
Yeah GattRampage, Warlock and Bard clearly have great social abilities, and their sub-classes have existential means to perform as an assassin type. Daggers, Arrows, Swords, all tricks of the trade. So is poison, convincing a character to off themselves, publicly ostracizing a character in order to get someone to off them for you...the possibilities are not for want, lol.
