I don’t. What I have seen so far is a joke. This is just to get people to spend more money, the recent book releases combined with the UA shows no clear vision, no quality control and no effort beyond ‘lets see how much money we can milk before the gravy train come to an end’.
i think that dnd 5e was pretty good. but now with "ONE DND" they are trying to make more money. make it digital, have people probabaly pay for a million digital minifigure cloths, poses etc. and remaking all the core rule books. like bruh.
Dear lord, they're trying to make more money?! How very dare they!
That's not all-- they're remaking the core rule books! It's not like they've ever done that before, this is completely unheard of!
Egads! Now they're even trying to give a high quality option for a type of playing that has become exceedingly popular in recent years. WHEN WILL THIS MADNESS STOP!?!
Like, seriously, all of your complaints seem like positive things.
they make enough money right now. they dont need to increase profit.
first of all everything that you will probably have to pay for: minis, maps, spells, classes, backrounds, feats, customization to maps and minis. what if they cant give you what you want? want starry walls? oops! we dont have that! think of another idea! yeah we have brown walls! buy those! they only cost 15$ and only another 5$ to put them onto the walls. want to make custom worlds? only pay 20 bucks a month! listen if VTT on becomes super popular, DNDS gonna be EXSPENSIVE.
I play a mobile game on my iPhone. I’ve played it for about 5 years and it has in game purchases. I have yet, in 5 years, spend one cent on this mobile game. I know people who have spent hundreds on the very same game. Just because there is a pay option does not mean you have to make those purchases. WotC is not going to come to your house and force you to do it. If you don’t want to spend the money on their VTT you don’t have to.
If you cannot play without having that starry wall on your map and can’t use the default stone wall and describe to your players “the walls of this chamber are covered in a starry mural” then I don’t know what to tell you, you’re going to spend a lot of money. But that’s on you.
Like I mentioned earlier, I play on Roll20. I use an image I got off of a google search that looks in no way like my actual character (my Druid has a 4 Charisma, the picture I am using is a Druid character but not too bad looking. I couldn’t find an ugly Druid pic, but guess what? It works just fine). And no money spent.
WotC cannot take your money, you have to give it to them. Only you can decide what you are willing to spend. And if their VTT is too expensive for you there are other ways to play. I doubt they will cut off all other VTT’s from allowing D&D. If they do they will probably have another OGL-like problem on their hands.
As for the new edition, it is supposed to be backwards compatible but WotC hasn’t come out and stated exactly what they mean by that. I feel it is backwards compatible with what I’ve seen so far. But rules are being cleaned up, new conditions are being added to the core rules, and a host of other changes. So there kind of needs to be a new edition with what they are offering so far. And the PHB, DMG, and MM are the first to be released in 2024. What they will change after that is anyone’s guess.
is there a forum where the developers talk and we can talk
I think WotC should start doing a lot more player research before they press on with 6E before they have another problem on their hands. Also they can come straight on what 6E is, is it really backwards compatible? What does that mean? Will there be a new PHB, MM, DMG other books?
They have come straight on what it is. What they mean by "backwards compatible" is that you can use any 5e adventures that you have with the new rules. They've made that pretty clear.

I think they need to reduce the number of classes back to a basic set and build a rules set for creating new subclasses and classes. Let the players and DMs have free reign to build as they want in their own worlds.
I think they need to reduce the number of classes back to a basic set and build a rules set for creating new subclasses and classes. Let the players and DMs have free reign to build as they want in their own worlds.
They can already do this, the number of classes does not prevent this. With the play test showing that they seem to be standardizing when subclass features come online so there is that.
But I don’t think reduced classes is the way to go. The PHB classes were already classes in AD&D so reducing them would go too far in my opinion.

Well, it turns out, that given the homebrew system here, that they can already do that, because DM's don't have to use anything in any book, nor do they have to use anything as it is written.
For my next campaign, we broke it down into what is currently 20 class -- but no subclasses, although I wanted there to be a rough approximation of different directions each could go with a couple of abilities more or less defining those "paths", so to speak.
And while some folks here might come and police that (since policing serves the function of maintaining the status quo, blah blah) they don't have the ability to dump on my doing that because that's the way the game is built.
I didn't even use the homebrew system myself, and don't follow the same path for things they chose to.

while i do enjoy dnd beyond, i do know how to do the pen and paper. I'm not a spring chicken anymore I find carrying a tablet with the books in it a lot easier to carry than physical books to the game.
While I can do a character up in 5 minutes on beyond, it takes 15 - 20 min pen and paper maybe a bit longer when helping a new person. and it makes explaining to new people how the game works when i can show them the book,
while i do like having some of the hard copy books i expect that soon everything will go digital, and hard bound books will be a thing of the past.
I like being able to share them digitally. Most of my players are four hours away by car (or more) and I am a tad bit luckier than they are money wise right now, so being able to share them through a campaign even if we have no other use for it is cool.
I have many iPads — enough that I have almost one for every player, and zoom or teams and a tripod allows me to do a lot. And my three main ones still weigh less than the hardcovers.
I expect a shift to paperbacks again, long before they stop the printing. And these days, I figure I will be dead before that happens, lol
i bet not everyone has that many tablets/portable devices. also i play in a group with like sixteen people. so you would need a lot of tablets. ( we have three DMS so its more split up into different rooms with different stuff happening even though its all in the same story)
I would not take that bet. Most folks who have them only have one, lol. And yeah, I have "teams" of 5 to 9 each. Co-DMing is hard -- kudos to you and your group!

I think there will always be people that want to play in person but you are correct that it may be harder to do. But like so many things time and technology marches on and we need to adapt or be left behind.
And you are correct that CHA isn’t necessarily tied to beauty, but it kind of was when I played AD&D, so at least how we understood it, so I kind of think of it that way still. But the point I was making still stands.
I think they need to reduce the number of classes back to a basic set and build a rules set for creating new subclasses and classes. Let the players and DMs have free reign to build as they want in their own worlds.

You are well within your rights to play D&D however you like and change it based on what works for you and your players. And I don’t think anyone disputes that. I don’t think anyone is trying to “police” you. This thread is about 6E classes and we can see some of the direction WotC is going with the UA. I’ve posted (and started) many threads speculating on what I would like to see in the next edition prior to the UA’s coming out. But now that we can get a glimpse of it my thoughts have changed somewhat as we can see how far (or how little) they plan on changing it. It’s still too early to tell but as more UA’s come out the clearer the picture is becoming

I didn't suggest that people were going to come and police me, specifically, but that some folks would come to police people doing that kind of thing (and using my own work as an example).
Wanted to clarify that.
I am following along with 6e development rather closely -- and playtesting everything and taking notes and being a good little old lady, lol. I even used it as an excuse to push out the launch of above campaign to January of next year for a firm deadline. This gives me the chance to see if there is anything that contributes to the project in 6e, even vaguely.
I have been through this before, as I would think you likely have. They aren't giving away a lot, just enough, and while I won't speak to reactions overall, it seems to be interesting and at least somewhat in response to reviews, posts in the assorted forums here (wow, that was a lot of reading to do), and then doubtless their own whines.
So far, I only have issues with one major thing (major meaning it stopped my entire freaking game which is made up of mostly PoC and LGBTBQ folks), and then the way that some of the new crap is going to make my "open to all, regular rules" game more of a nightmare than it should be, lol. But it is a dungeon crawl, so not a big stressor.
What I want is for them to ensure they stop putting in "optional rules" and then not making them available as functions lol. I also sorta hope they drop the spell slot system, but that was killed pretty dead, lol. My group wants a magic point system.

And with that mindset we wouldn't have PCs, the internet, etc. A lotta progress comes from people chasing ever more dollar signs, particularly in the entertainment/disposable income market segment.
i guess your right. but i did not say that they need to stp making money i meant they dont need to be making more and more every time they make money. for instance if the company makes enough money, they dont need to raise the price.

You're right that they can't increase their profit every single year, but they can try.
Saying that they "don't need to" is just... not an accurate description of how businesses work. If WotC decided that they "didn't need to" make more money however long ago, then they never would have bought D&D in the first place. It would have died, and you probably never would have heard "Dungeons and Dragons" said in your lifetime. Considering the fact that you're on this forum, I don't think that's what you want. Besides, a stagnant profit is unsustainable. Each year that WotC doesn't try to increase profit is a year where they roll the dice to see if something goes wrong. If they aren't actively expanding, they're just waiting for something bad to happen. When (not if) it does, people will inevitably lose their livelihoods.

Do you realize they do have to keep paying people? Every two weeks, they need to send out checks. And those people get raises every year. And other expenses go up every year.
And, to top it off, as a publicly traded company, they have a responsibility to provide value for their shareholders.
I understand you are young, but if you’re going to use that as a shield when people ask you a reasonable question, then maybe don’t spout off about how corporate governance should work. You can’t have it both ways.

As a note, legally, they absolutely must try to increase not only profit, but the value of the stocks, every single year -- and are measured quarterly on it.
That is the nature of a for profit corporation.
In this case, that is Hasbro, which did not achieve that as a company as a whole, and had several major areas of problem (notably the segment around film production and distribution and television production and distribution). They had a loss, and the stock price dropped, and that made stockholders (investors) rather angry and they had to explain to them what they are going to do about it.
The only division of Hasbro that didn't have issues was...
Wizards. Specifically the D&D stuff.
So stock market analysts naturally said "how can it make more money there to prop up the other parts" while they await the sale of the film and TV stuff. And since shareholders want to know the answer now, they had to come up with one.
( and, really, being an overperforming unit is a company that is having a really crappy time is something i have a LOT of empathy for right now, given my situation, lol)

You know, it’s amazing the way so many people can speak with so much authority on exactly what WotC’s upcoming VTT will mean for the company and the game’s popularity when we barely know anything about it.
im just saying the new VTT will make money. and will cost them fans, fans who will move to other games: pathfinder warhammer, an other games. and that will eventually cost them much more than this new VTT will help.
I don't know how you can say that. The VTT isn't out and won't be until next year. We don't know what kind of price, if any, there will be. There is speculation, but it's just that. Speculation. And I don't need a programmer to actually play the game. I just need them to write the code that will do what the game rules express. And if they choose to charge the customer base more than the market will bear, then the game will flounder and die. I hope that's not the case, but I plan on spending as little as possible, and I probably won't even want to play on their VTT. I have no interest in 3d models, animations, etc.. I'm fine with Roll20, a 2D map and 2D tokens (or even just a picture of a scene as the backdrop and Theatre of the Mind for play).
It's funny you mention warhammer. From what I understand Games Workshop (the makers of warhammer) have been on the leading edge of extracting as much money as possible from their players for years now. WotC is way behind in the "cash grab" market and Games Workshop is king in that arena.
EDIT: P.S. stop watching YouTube videos about the doom and gloom of 1D&D and the VTT. They are all talking out their backsides at this point. Relax and enjoy the 1D&D UA's as they come out, provide your feedback, and wait until there is something concrete to complain about.
I'd really like to see the place where Wizards or hasbro has talked about the VTT and how much they will charge for it and how it work and all that.
because I looked, and there ain't a whole lot, and it doesn't say a damn thing about the price or anything.
I don't even know if they are going to truly incorporate it into DDB. Might be way too early to speak to the nature of what the VTT means -- especially since just like all the others it will be just as iterative process (and even if they have a cool #D thing, they have to set it up so that folks can use it easily. And hell, I would love to have a chance to model some stuff for it.
And will we be able to import models from hero Forge? Other sources? Custom stuff I put together in Poser or Daz3D's program? Will I need to buy a high end modeler, or can I just use Wings3D or Blender? Things like that are just thoughts, and I am not even a big fan of any existing VTT, because all of the are a pain in the ass to use.
This is silly to stress about -- the VTT is going to require so much freaking work, and ultimately what value is it going to be to someone like me -- who does not use any published setting and uses a ton of the optional rules? I can't even get Sanity added to the character sheets here -- of what interest is a VTT that will likely have the same shortcomings for me?
I get by with a camera pointing at a sheet of graph paper (a big sheet, lol) with miniatures on it that I move or a background on a whiteboard. And a VTt without video for me is just not going to fly, anyway.
So, see? No one can answer this stuff because no one actually knows what the hell is going on outside the programmers and designers and trut me they are arguing about all of this stuff themselves (and programmers are crazy).

I play a mobile game on my iPhone. I’ve played it for about 5 years and it has in game purchases. I have yet, in 5 years, spend one cent on this mobile game. I know people who have spent hundreds on the very same game. Just because there is a pay option does not mean you have to make those purchases.

They have come straight on what it is. What they mean by "backwards compatible" is that you can use any 5e adventures that you have with the new rules. They've made that pretty clear.
Look at what you've done. You spoiled it. You have nobody to blame but yourself. Go sit and think about your actions.

So, at the end of it all, your argument is just "but what if I don't wanna."
I'm going to choose not to dignify this with an explanation as to why its a moot point. It should be obvious.

More core 'abilities' to use for various melee class options rather than only by choosing archetypes.
And with that mindset we wouldn't have PCs, the internet, etc. A lotta progress comes from people chasing ever more dollar signs, particularly in the entertainment/disposable income market segment.
Define "enough" in Stock Market Analyst speak, please.

She just means companies need to make money and make a profit in order to keep producing cool new stuff like new D&D products.
I really like D&D, especially Ravenloft, Exandria and the Upside Down from Stranger Things. My pronouns are she/they (genderfae).
Look at what you've done. You spoiled it. You have nobody to blame but yourself. Go sit and think about your actions.
