“It is a better world. A place where we are responsible for our actions, where we can be kind to one another because we want to and because it is the right thing to do instead of being frightened into behaving by the threat of divine punishment.” ― Oramis, Eldest by Christopher Paolini.
5e will never have that problem, so long as they stay focused on the balance between different subclasses- the other problem with prestige classes is that because they could apply to so many different builds they had to be considered for many different characters you attempt to make. It isn't that they existed- it's the way they interacted with the multiclass system and often made for better builds than just taking more levels in a given single class. In 5e multi-classing is more heavily penalized to begin with, and you're limited to one subclass per regular class and it's part of the natural progression of each class- in other words, they can add plenty of them, so long as they aren't significantly better than the ones in the PHB on a numbers basis, and even if they were- 5e tends toward having optimization not matter as much by limiting the extent of superiority.
Having recently played a "knight" the marking is, yes, a bit broken, but it blends well with an inexperienced group. I was the tank. AC of 20, but for some reason my team would run out first, gaining the aggro. A-lot of common creatures out there, and some of the more advanced ones too don't always change targets, or their "tactics" are to attack the weakest or attack an enemy an ally is attacking. This is the weakness you can take advantage of with your knight.
But mostly this all depends on your DM, My DM likes to TRY to kill us off so he tends to focus on one guy, or "whoever is closest" So my cleric would run out and hit a fire snake. Great, there is my healer on the front lines! But here I come, wacking the fire snake, but because we are surrounded by Kobolds and such, for some reason my DM has the fire snake attack my cleric. The Fire Snake has Multi-attack, so I get 2 free reactions against the fire snake. Wham, Bam, Thank you, ma'am, the fire snake is dead. These kinds of rules and subclasses all depend on your group make-up and your DM. Know your DM, know your party, then make your character.
Is that meta-gaming? Yeah, of course, it is, but who WANTS to be useless? Not me, that's for sure. My DM is usually very forgiving and if the subclass we are using doesn't pan out in the first couple of sessions, you can usually talk him into letting you change things around. Right NOW I am playing an Artificer Gunsmith and that thing is so overpowered it hurts.
But for all intents and purposes looking at the knight, he is designed for mounted combat, as most things will attack your mount before attacking you. Giving you those free reactions. ;) So put your knight on a horse.
Hello Phillip, I'm a bit late but I have been playing a knight (lvl10) and I actually found it extremely powerful. here are some mechanics that i found useful to be able to proc your reaction (Hold the line and special Implacable mark attacks).
Attack actions options: Duel: with heavy two handed weapon. DPS monster Shove/prone, Extra attack (with advantage, Great Weapon Master). reaction Implacable mark or hold the line, when creature use movement to stand up unless he wants to stay down and take your advantage punishment ^^.
multiple enemies: sword and shield. Control Freak Attack and place mark on enemy 1, use Bonus action to Shove/prone enemy 2 (shield master Feat), Extra attack on enemy 2 (advantage +implacable mark) Reaction Hold the line or special attack on prone enemy when he gets up, Implacable Mark on Marked enemy 1 if he moves.
i Found that the Key mechanic IS shove/prone. I am an unstoppable force on the battlefield and when the monsters get to big a nice enlarge spell from my buddies will do the trick ^^.

that is what i said fighter or paladin alike xD
So then, who needs subclasses at all?
Hell for that matter, who needs so many classes? Just make Warrior and Mage and then have the only difference be background
Warrior
Mage

i just wanna avoid the absolute shitshow 3.5 turned into with prestige classes all over the place....
