Here's a theoretical build. (and i hate to be the 500th post for echo knight)
You play a range based fighter, go echo knight and do this
Stay at range and summon your buddy, have him go melee mode and run up, you will shoot at the enemy with your ranged weapon, whilst your buddy is ahead slicing and dicing. If the get to close for comfort, then switch places

"Anyone can smith at the cosmic anvil, yet only I can forge a weapon as good as thee."
If by buddy, you mean echo, it doesn’t quite work like that. It does not make an attack. You make an attack as if you were standing in the echo’s space. So, effectively, it has the same weapon equipped as you do. You can definitely have a bow out and have the shot originate from the echo’s space. But it can’t be using melee while you use ranged.
As Xalthu points out, your echo won't be making melee attacks unless you're making melee attacks. You are, however, completely free to have your echo run into melee to try and attract enemy attacks while you shoot away. Trading an infinite resource for damage against your allies can be very helpful.
We all ya could in theory, have Xb expert or anything let's ya shoot in closs proximity. Look through a keyhole, spawn an echo next to someone, have it shoot at point blank and then unleash incarnation for a unarmed strike which won't be much but hey now they may be tied up in combat with an echo xD
