So typically what I've seen in a lot of builds (other martial classes included) is that they tend to choose and specialize in a single weapon. It may be a greatsword wielding powerhouse, a longbow ranged build, or a sword-and-board front liner. I was curious though if anyone had ever built or had suggestions for a fighter that used whatever was around (bows, daggers, swords, axes, maces, etc.). This could work for essentially any martial class, but due to the fighters increased amount of feats and general flexibility I thought it may work out here the best~
Just throw out any experience or ideas you have to sate my curiosity and thank you all in advance!
The big thing would be ability scores. You’d want to max out STR and DEX. You could probably go with lighter armor as a result, which would be nice. But spending all your feat slots on ASIs would keep you well rounded and able to be effective with any weapon, without specializing in one. Then maybe focus on non-weapon specific feats for any slots you have left. Something like lucky is always useful. Things like sentinel or sharpshooter can work with pretty much whatever weapon you have in your hand (obviously that means melee for sentinel and ranged for sharpshooter). You could take, I think it’s brawler, that lets your unarmed strike do more damage, so you can be good even without a weapon. Or take the feat that gives you some more skill proficiencies to keep with the well rounded theme.
Unlike other editions, 5e tends already set up characters to use multiple types of weapons with roughly the same amount of skill. Fighting styles are good for groups of weapons as are weapon-related feats. And the differences between weapons on the weapon chart are minimal. So, if you build a sword-and-board fighter and swap out his longsword for an battleaxe, there shouldn't be much of a difference. Give him a warhammer and he'll be doing bludgeoning damage. The fighting styles and feats might give a special bonus to one-handed, two-handed, two-weapon, shield, or other categories of weapons so that might make them less effective with a greatsword than longsword and shield...but not terrible.
Remember though that all melee weapons can use STR by default and all ranged weapons can use DEX by default...and Finesse allows you to use the other one if you choose. So even if your STR20/DEX08 fighter picks up a rapier, he can still use +5 to hit and damage from his STR. He might want to stick to thrown weapons for ranged though.

Uhmmm... that makes me think about getting Expertise in Shields... and some Proficiencies in Hammers and Lances. ( like a Hoplite greek warrior )
