Alert is never a *bad* feat to have, for certain. With an 18 Dexterity you're probably fine for a while with the stats you have, but boosting it to 20 will do a lot for you. Besides the attack/damage rolls, it'll boost your Initiative, Dex saves, and probably your AC since I'm guessing you have Light Armor. In addition, it'll boost the DC for your Battle Master maneuvers. My gut says boost the Dex to 20 at Lvl 6, then maybe take another feat at Lvl 8. It's also never a bad idea to boost your Con score. More hit points are always welcome, and failing a Con save sucks out loud. Maybe consider Resilient(Wisdom), then at some point use an ASI to even out your Str and Wis scores? Failing a Con save wrecks you, failing a Wis save might turn you against your allies :) Stat bumps may not be as sexy as feats, but they can still be important. Look at the rolls you're making, especially the ones you're failing, and decide if it's worth bumping the relevant stat.
You may also get inspired to take certain feats based on what happens in your game. Same with multiclassing. With your stats you can multiclass with pretty much anything except Wizard. Fighter can work well with pretty much any other class, depending on what you're trying to do. Mechanically, just be aware of what you're giving up vs. what you're getting. You'll be slowing your progression as a Fighter so it'll be longer before you get additional Battle Master maneuvers and dice, for example. A Fighter's high-level abilities aren't terribly exciting, they're basically "Remember that ability you got that you can only do once per rest? Now you can do it twice!" kind of boosts. That doesn't mean those boosts aren't REALLY useful, though. Story-wise, you may find your character taking a path that would suggest levels in another class. Are they becoming a person of faith? Maybe consider levels in Paladin, Cleric or Druid. Trying to be sneakier or more underhanded? Some Rogue levels might be a good fit. Not everyone cares as much about the story reasons for multiclassing, so as the kids say "you do you".
if you are playing a ranged character and tend to be the sneakiest of the party i would suggest taking 2-4 levels of rogue mainly for the sneak attack damage when hiding from enemies

Well, are there any things you want him to be able to do do outside of shooting a crossbow really hard? That will decide on what you pick on lvl up.
alert is always good to have

If you were going for a completely archery based kinda guy...
why battlemaster from fighter over arcane archer from fighter (out of curiosity).
knowing this motivation is the key factor to being able to help you with your vision, vs just imparting stereotypical cookie cutter builds

Remember if you're making the character on DnD beyond then you may not have other things e.g arcane archer
