I'm trying to create a custom magic item that is basically an orb that a sorc can shoot out that returns to them. I initially tried using a dart and just changing the attack stat to CHA, but it seems that you cannot do that.
Is there a way to make a wondrous item (which would then remove the hard coded Melee (STR/DEX) or Ranged (DEX) tags? So basically it would be a wondrous item that has the attack range of a dart, but deals 1d4 bludgeoning and uses CHA for attack and damage rolls.
There are so many different selectable drop downs when creating custom items. I'm probably just missing something.
If its an external magic item which you trigger then it would be a dex saving throw, while if its a thrown item then it's a range attack. The only way you would add cha is if the item allowed you to cast a spell, in which case just give them a wand of magic missile and it's more practical. A single dart damage roll will quickly become too insignificant to be useful.

It's not a single dart damage roll. I'm just using the dart for reference. It's a magic item that is basically a metal ball that our telekinetic sorc can use to bounce back and forth with increasingly scaling damage that also has a chance to hurt him if he fails to "catch" it. Its meant to be used side by side with his spells. Regardless the question wasn't about alternatives, the question was how do I do it?

Building it as a custom cantrip, or a magic item that grants a custom cantrip, would seem to be your best option.
If you need it to be a weapon attack specifically, then the workaround would be giving the weapon a fixed bonus to compensate for the difference.

I hadn't thought about doing a custom cantrip. That's a really good idea. Thanks!
