Hey, so going into a lvl 3 One Shot and got owned before (played a Polearm Tiefling Hexblade Pact of The Blade and made it out with 1 HP left) so looking for something similar this time but a bit more caster vs frontline melee.
Idea is Hexblade (but just for the armor and shield) Pact of Chain (Imp familiar) Half Elf (Using Tasha's rules so all 4 points into Charisma) and we get one Feat. The spells I'm never sure what to take, usually go defense and hex.
Ability score 9/14/15/11/13/20, AC of 18.
Feat - Inspiring Leader (+8 temp HP for me, all party members and to my Imp)
Invocations - Agonizing Blast and Investment of the Chain Master.
Cantrips Eldritch - Blast, Minor Illusion (couldn't think of anything else useful).
Spells - Shield, Hex, Darkness, Misty Step
Idea being start off casting Hex, then Eldritch Blast, Imps turn next, uses Help action. Next round I Eldritch blast with advantage, if it seems safe (Imp not surrounded) I bonus action to have Imp come out of Invisibility and attack (with advantage). Then just keep that up.
Other option if DM allows (not sure if he would) I give up on Hex and cast Darkness on a pebble and hand it to my Imp. Imp then is in perma darkness when attacking (so advantage) and after attacking flys up 20 feet so not covering enemy anymore (so attacking Imp at disadvantage) and I blast away from a distance and Imp just keeps diving back down with darkness on him and attacking. So I lose the Hex bonus, but I almost guarantee my Imp hits everytime and keeps it alive.
Any thoughts on the build and the ideas around it? I know Genie and Undead Warlocks probably give better offensive abilities at 3rd level but the additional 4 AC just seems hard to pass up when majority of the time i'm Eldritch Blasting and using my Imp.
I'm not sure on the rules and I can't check at the moment, but can Imps see through the Darkness? Because if not, they'll have disadvantage on attacks (they can't see the target) and the two will cancel each other out?
If you're not willing or able to to discuss in good faith, then don't be surprised if I don't respond, there are better things in life for me to do than humour you. This signature is that response.

Yep Imps can see 120 feet in darkness both regular and magical. So they have built in Devil's Sight.
I was thinking of adding Devil's Sight on my character and have the Imp fly back and forth toward me and the enemy so that I'm also in Darkness (but can see so advantage on attacks and disadvantage against me) but thought that would be to OP and annoy the DM. Gotta make it a bit challenging. At least this way if its only my Imp in darkness I can still get hit easily enough and lose concentration.
Not bad as long as you don’t get stuck in small spaces that the imp can’t get far enough away with the darkness.
Also, Tasha’s doesn’t allow you to put all 4 points from half elf in one ability score. Only allows you to put +2/+1/+1 in any three scores. Unless I misunderstood what you were saying.

Ya the darkness scenario would only work in certain situations, though because it can fly it helps that just flying straight up could work, but again dungeon ceilings aren't typically high so could not work.
I believe Tasha's does allow you to put all points into one ability. It states "take any ability score increase you gain in your race or subrace and apply it to any ability score of your choice. If you gain more than one increase, you can apply those increases to the same ability score, and you can't increase a score above 20."
That to me says if you gain more than one ability score, example +2 str +2 con, you can apply those increases to the same ability, like all 4 in charisma, as long as it doesn't exceed 20. Do you read that differently?

Sorry to burst your bubble but you have an important typo
"Here’s how to do it: take any ability score increase you gain in your race or subrace and apply it to an ability score of your choice. *If you gain more than one increase, you can’t apply those increases to the same ability score,* and you can’t increase a score above 20."
Added asterisk since I don't know how to format on mobile

Wow good call on that! Clearly that is my mind trying to fool me letting me build OP characters haha.
Yeah, that would put half elf, mountain dwarf (+2/+2) and non-variant Human (+1 five times) the races of choice if you could do that.
Yep thats dumb of me. I think what fooled me was the can't increase beyond 20 part, because I always use point buy and never roll, I thought well obviously it means you can add all of them into one ability because how could any race ever go beyond 20 since no race allows more than +2 per ability and point buy stops at 15 per ability........but ya if you roll your stats then you can definitely get that so it makes sense.

Happens to the best of us, the stat requirements for multi-class always sneak up on me (once made a pally warlock with 8 str which .... means i messed up and the DM didn't catch it either, in my defense they were a Dex Pally ;) )
