We all know about the gap between martials and casters, and I was thinking about tightening the gap with an easy fix.
Basically, I just made magic weapons and armor more accessible by having them available in weapon stores.
Using magic weapons/armor:
From levels around 1-4 players would have proficiency with Common weapons, 4-8 also with Uncommon, 8-12 Rare, 12-16 Very Rare, 16-20 Legendary.
Players can still use weapons that are too advanced for their level if they somehow manage to get one, but they are not proficient with them, and when they use its magic, they roll a luck d20 DC 10 to see if the magic fails.
Getting magic weapons/armor:
Uncommon items cost four times more than Common, Rare 16 times, Very Rare 32, and legendary 128.
The reward players would also increase as the price for this stuff increases.
They can also randomly find them during the campaign.
Upgrade system:
Instead of buying a new weapon/armor, you can pay the store's mage smith (or something) to upgrade your weapon.
Upgrading to uncommon would take 1 hour, 6 hours for rare, 12 hours for very rare, and one day for legendary.
Upgrading costs the price of the common weapon, multiplied by 2 for uncommon, 4 for rare, 8 for very rare, and 16 for legendary.
Mage Smiths:
Special casters who specialize in producing magic military items. They dedicate their entire lives to dominate the art of forging and enchanting weaponry.
