I'm new to GMing online and with Beyond, so apologies if I'm missing something obvious. Is it possible to give my players control of a monster?
I'm running Out of the Abyss and there are a lot of NPC's at the start of the game, they all use various stat blocks like "Derro" or "Spy", can I give these to my players so they can use them? Ideally, so when I build an encounter, I can include them and they can roll on the NPC's behalf.
Oh great. Thanks. And would this added monster operate separately? or would it share the same initiative count? And once in a battle encounter, does the added monster work the same as a normal character sheet... spell slot tracker, single click roll dice, or would all that have to be done manually?
Hi there and welcome to being a DM while yes you can in fact give control over NPC's. I would suggest against doing so unless they are active allies of the PC's. Giving a player control over an opposing npc/monster is giving them the control to disrupt the encounter. I strongly suggest against.

Hi Xeresia, Thanks for the welcome and the advice. In this instance, the adventure suggests giving players the NPCs to control (With the understanding that the DM can override any decision that would be against their nature). It's a jailbreak situation, with the players and about 8 other NPCs, all of whom will and do fight alongside them as part of the breakout. It just means that my players aren't having a turn and then waiting for me to roll hit for 8 Npcs each round. I've toyed with the idea of them the npc group just doing a set amount of damage per turn, but I think this way they may form more of a bond with the NPCs.
The adventure was obviously designed to be played, sat at a table, where I could just hand a stat block to a player and say "You roll for this NPC too" but my players are pretty new to the whole thing, and spread across the country so VTT is often the way we play. So if I can set them up with a "one-click roll to hit" and the same with spell/ damage stuff, like a dnd beyond char sheet, I think that would be helpful. I'm not really sure that it's doable tbh. I could always set up another char with the same stats as a monster stat block for them, but again, that's faffy and might upset the whole game.
As I say, I'm still pretty new to this, so I do appreciate the advice.

One player can add the monster to their "Extras".
