Are there any rules (homebrew or not) for using the 5e rules in a "modern" setting? I'd really love to run something using guns and cars and stuff. I imagine a successful "modern" setting would have to include new/updated classes.

You could find something, but the challenge is to keep the power balance. How could I explain with some example? In the first Robocop movie the first time when the cyborg hero faces the robot ED-209 this kick-ass him, but in the end of the movie our friend the agent Murphy thanks the Cobra assault canon with only one or two shots the ED-209 patrolling the building of the OCP was totally KO. In the first movie of Alien: the eight passenger only one xenomorph was enough to kill amost all the staff of the Nostrome, but in the sequel dozens, maybe even hundreds were killed from other room thanks the sentinel turrets. In the movie "Cobra" played by Silvester Stallone and Bridgit Nielsen, in a scene the girl couldn't face the night-slasher, only hide and run-away like in a survival horror videogame, but in the final confrotation the action hero was one-man-army and with enough weapons and ammo he could terminate all the cult of the new dawn. In some survival horror videogames some monster bosses could be killed very soon thanks the player had save the most powerful weapons against it.
A goblin with only an axe and a shield is nothing, but the same enemy with a sniper rifle from the top of a roof is a totally menace, even with the same monster stats. If you have played some Batle Royal you could find the different when you are fighting with a gun, a shotgun or a machine-gun.
If you mean with magic etc, 5e is fine more or less as-is. Perhaps a couple of skills added or tweaked, maybe I'd add a seventh ability for driving vehicles (as opposed to the skill that there is tacked on in some cases), but it's largely fine.
If you mean you want to have a no-magic setting and play a game moremsimilar to The Terminator or something...I'm sure it's possible and you could probably find some 3rd party conversions...I'd actually be tempted drop 5e altogether and find a more suitable engine. I'm not overly familiar with TTRPGs, but Modiphius' 2d20 system would be a fairly easy conversion.

If you're not willing or able to to discuss in good faith, then don't be surprised if I don't respond, there are better things in life for me to do than humour you. This signature is that response.

I forget the name, but I know there was a kickstarter to update d20 modern from 3.x rules to 5e.

It depends on what you mean by modern.
