I want to run a random one shot for my group, and i would love to do some kind of pvp arena battle either solo or as two teams. any resources for this or any one have any ideas on how to make it work?
I’d say don’t do solo. PCs are not built for PvP, just mathematically the numbers don’t work. Particularly when you factor in turn based combat, it just comes down to whoever wins initiative, wins the fight. To a lesser extent, starting distance can matter as well. Start at 35’ apart or more, and melee characters just get screwed. Team based would be less bad, since odds are it won’t be one entire side going before the other does. But still, mathematically, PCs hit points to damage ratio isn’t built for going against other PCs. And it really will come down to who has more high initiative rolls.
I agree with Xalthu. I've had PvP in my game (do to a character acting out) and aside from the fact that the game is not really set up for that it can also create some serious tension at the table. This however depends on the table obviously.
That being said you mentioned it being a one-shot and with that in mind if you only spend a little time with this and for instance have it be the opening I think it can have a fun effect. I just wouldn't make it an 'integral' part of the game and make it more of a gimmick if that makes sense?
