Like wondering why i'd want to use a long sword when i only get +3 damage compared to +4 on a rapier answer two handed
It actually doesn't make a difference; the +4 damage to the d8 on a rapier means the average result will be the same as 1d10 + 3; and that's without accounting for the loss in damage from a lower to-hit.

still i'm guessing by the text something about the sword allowing you to see a hidden city it was worth getting
Pre gen stats are helping me alot in weeks 1 to 4 i had no clue how bonuses where calculated i have an understanding now
My campaign i'm running is from a uk partworks magazine, each issue i get an encounter which seems to be stand alone but i'm running it as one story but encounter 5 seems to link to 2 and the publisher has said you get 7 adventuers so i'm running all 7 as an ongoing game but i also plan to run lmop as a prequel basicly so we get a better feel for the town as we are most weeks starting in phandalin
Plus i want to use lmop so it adds a feeling of you are 1 adventuerer of many
Before starting i thought the adventuers were set in stone now i know you can modify them or chop them up etc i realise that just a couple of pre made adventures can provide almost infinite stories
Thank you for helping i feel more confident prepping my game and helping my player now(yep i'm modding it to a 1 on 1 with me being a dmpc)

I'm hoping I've parsed this correctly.
The added number at the end is defined by different stats. If your Strength were higher and gave a +4 instead, then the longsword would be on a par with the rapier, when used single-handed.
You can use a longsword two-handed which gives you 1d10+3. On average, would give the same damage as the rapier (8.5). However, while the rapier would give a higher minimum damage (5 instead of 4 for the longsword), the longsword has a higher maximum potential damage (13 instead of 12 for the rapier).
On a related note, the rapier has more consistent damage while the longsword is more "swingy".
The longsword has more potential in the long run. You could increase your Strength to +4 with your next ASI, which gives a minimum of being on a par with the rapier (without improving your Dex) if you have a shield or you can opt to go higher damage two-handed. You could improve it to +5 and no matter what you'll be at least on a par with the rapier and possibly better if you are happy to forgo the shield.
There are good reasons for picking the rapier would too (eg you want the shield and never two-handed, so you don't need to invest as much to get parity, you're a Rogue, etc), but there are reasons why you might pick the longsword as well.
