I am creating a new character that is a Fighter (Echo-Knight) and was debating on giving him a Net that he can use, but I had some questions:
The description of a Net states: "A Large or smaller creature hit by a net is restrained until it is freed. A net has no effect on creatures that are formless, or creatures that are Huge or larger."
By 'Hit' I assume that I would make a standard attack roll to see if I hit, correct?
If the attack 'hits', then per the description, as long as the creature is Large or smaller, and not formless, he is automatically restrained, correct?
Are there any other creative uses for a net?
Let me know,
Cheers!

Breathe, dragons; sing of the First World, forged out of chaos and painted with beauty. Sing of Bahamut, the Platinum, molding the shape of the mountains and rivers; Sing too of Chromatic Tiamat, painting all over the infinite canvas. Partnered, they woke in the darkness; partnered, they labored in acts of creation.
If you're not willing or able to to discuss in good faith, then don't be surprised if I don't respond, there are better things in life for me to do than humour you. This signature is that response.

Yes that's about it. It can be useful to leave solo monster restrained but it's relatively easy to escape from it and prevent the net user from using Extra Attack with it so in the end it's a minor debuff and speed limiter that come with a certain cost.
Creative use with net is can be useful for allies to follow up with spells or effects that impose a Dexterity saving throw since it has disadvantage.
Also it severely limits your actions to throw it no matter how many attacks you have.
I assumed that I would be using an 'action' to throw it, opposed to making a weapon attack (or two, once I gain that). Why would throwing the Net limit my actions?

You have disadvantage to make range attack with a net because it has a range 5/15, which means you have disadvantage on the attack roll if you are within 5 feet of a hostile creature, or when attacking a target beyond normal range.
Keep in mind on the net you are almost always at disadvantage with it (feats can mitigate this).
If my character is a Fighter, they are proficient in Martial Weapons (which the net falls under), why would they have Disadvantage?
With ranged attacks, you have Disadvantage if an enemy is within 5ft of you when you make the attack (this can be removed.by taking certain feats such as the Gunner feat). You also have an associated array of ranges presented as such: (X/Y). X is the normal range, Y is the maximum range. For distances between X and Y, you can still attack but you're at Disadvantage (greater than Y is out of range). The array for a Net is (5/15), meaning between 5 and 10 feet you also get Disadvantage. Combine the two and targets that are at or less than 15' are at Disadvantage and those at more than 15' or are untargettable.
Also it severely limits your actions to throw it no matter how many attacks you have.

You can't use Extra Attack or anything else that involves attacking (it's in the description). So Round 1 you throw the net...then you can't do much else. By Round 2 they've probably escaped. So you're sacrificing your first round to throw this net. It's often not worth it.

Nets are wonky, it’s ranged with a range of 5/15 (noting the “special” property)
ranged weapons have disadvantage when a hostile creature is within 5 feet of you (including the target of the attack)
But the “normal” part of the Nets ranged property is 5 feet. The designers messed this one up, they should have specified in the “special” properties that a Net does not have disadvantage used in melee within 5 feet.
UA playtests have suggested that Nets will be adventuring gear instead of weapons in the upcoming D&d release this year, which will remove the ranged problem because it might change to a dex save.
Another way to rule this is to say it is a melee weapon with reach 15 but that is homebrew.
speak to your DM, ask if you have disadvantage at 5 feet.

It is also fairly easy to get out of/cut but it will take the creatures action to do so.
