So I just rushed to my local delivery pickup to get my package, rushed home and opened the overengineered, yet nicely made, cardboard sleeve to be opened with what feels like a overly simplified and changed experience.. Vs. the now older DM Screen Reincarnated. Now don't get me wrong, I like the idea and I'm here for improvements.. but I 100% would love the opertunity to make my own custom one which I sure will be soon I'm sure.
Here is my breakdown of the new guide vs. the DM Screen Reincarnated (DMS-R).
Panel 1:- Conditions: No Graphics which help giving certain players a visual idea, Exhaustion table changed to more of a text based solution.
Panel 2:- Actions: Changed from 'Actions in Combat', added Influence, Magic, Study & Utilize Action, removed 'Use a Magic Item', 'Use an object' & 'Use a Special Ability' while all sections are mostly overly simplified. Improvising Damage Table: Good table but a huge gap under that could have had more data.. Damage by Severity and Level: Table change from Setback, Dangerous & Deadly to just Nuisance & Deadly, which is not anywhere near as Deadly as the older screen. Long Jump: Same as DMS-R High Jump: Same as DMS-R Concentration: Simplified and broken up Missing Suffocation: Completely missing (Was Panel 1), this is a relavant thing which they should have kept in..
Panel 3:- Skills: Title changed from 'Skills and associated abilities', larger font taking up a lot of room. Death Saving Throws: Wasn't in the old screen so this is a nice thing to see. Object Armor Class: Same as DMS-R Object Hit Points: Same as DMS-R but Large now says dining table not 10x10ft Window. Food, Drink and Lodging: Ale only now a Mug not also a Gallon, Missing Banquet, Cheese now a wedge not a hunk, Missing Meat Chunk. Typical Difficulty Classes: Title changed from 'Setting a DC' Light Sources: Title changed from 'Light', simplified, not a bad change. Obscured Areas: Overly simplified.
Panel 4:- Travel Pace: Effects changed. Services: Completely removed. Encounter Distance: Broken down into three seperate sections.. Travel Terrain - Same amount, broken down further than previous table, no Wastelands, added Waterborne. Audible Distance - Same as DMS-R. Visibility Outdoors - Same as DMS-R, changed height to clear day section. Weather: Added a weather table for Temperature, Wind and Precipitation. Character / Monster Scale Chart: Completely Removed.
Misc:- Point of Origin table: Removed showing Line, Cone, Cube, Sphere, Cylinder Things you can do on your turn: Removed and doesn't show up
Final thoughts, while progression is a good thing sometimes, this screens panel art is pointless wheras at-least last time it gave you some form of decent visual examples which would help with people that want quicker reference or alike..
What's your thoughts and opinions on yours? Are you happy with these changes?
