So, I made a unique longsword, and I'm trying to come up with some ideas for its magic abilities. It's called Horizon's Edge, it's a WIP, but it's public. Basically, an explorer crafted the sword to fight a group dedicated to destroying his hometown, and then the sword was given to my character years later, as a gift. You gain a +1 bonus to attack and damage rolls made with this magic weapon.
You can use an action cause the blade to to emit bright light in a 15-foot radius and dim light for an additional 15 feet. The light remains for 1 minute or until an attack using this weapon hits a creature. That creature must succeed on a DC 15 Constitution saving throw or take 2d10 radiant damage and become blinded for 1 minute. The weapon can't be used this way again until the next dawn.
First what was the group? Was it a race, a cabal of some sort, what? That gives you a starting point for what it does as it needs to counter what the group was/is and what types of things they used to attack the village. Then was the adventurer successful or was the village eventually destroyed? What level was the explorer when they had the blade made( this will help determine pluses and how strong any abilities etc. are)?
For examples: If the enemy's strength was their unity, the sword could sow confusion in some way with a hit (chance of?) or action (charged?). Blades made with the best intention can be made by the worst methods and embody those negative traits, and this could happen as a desperate last-stand attempt that failed regardless, leaving an imprint of hate and sorrow in the sword with abilities leaning into cruelty or even a curse.
As Wi1dBi11 shows, ask questions of this blade's history. Anyone with the skill to do so can simply make a blade sharper or stronger up to +3. For something unique, something unique needs to be involved.

I'd make it a +1 uncommon magic weapon that doesn't require attunement and that points north when directed to do so.
