I started playing D&D with some friends a couple of years ago, and bought a Player's Handbook. When I started running a game, I bought a Dungeon Master's Guide, and a Monster Manual. A few others in the group also bought one or more of these books, and additional books as new content was released. Then, along comes dndbeyond, the website/app everyone has been waiting for. I would not mind paying a fee to have an account on this site, but having to rebuy digital copies of books I've already spent over a hundred dollars on is untenable. My group decided to pitch in when someone decided to buy them all, but then, after a year, his account was canceled due to his card expiring. Rather than providing him a way to fix the problem by sampling inputing a new card, customer service apparently told him he would have to repurchase everything he had bought previously. So, seriously, what the hell is wrong with this company? How difficult would it be to include some kind of discount for people who purchased physical books. How hard would it be to not screw people over that have already paid for them twice?
I won't discuss the feud about the discount when the the hardcover is already purchased as it has been discussed at length.
However, the account cancelled because of the card seems hard to believe. Staff has confirmed that losing digital purchases for an account is not possible. Instead, it sounds like campaign content sharing has been turned off when the subscription expired. The solution should be a simple fix - resubscribe and turn content sharing back on for the campaign. If your friend has any issues with this, the support team is happy to help.
