I'm going to be running Dragon Heist and Descent into Avernus as a single campaign and I'm looking for ways to tie my players' backstories to the campaign material. Obviously, that means that some plot points might come up in this discussion, so consider yourself warned.
Text Below.
The logic of the campaign is that, with Dragon Heist being run "in summer", the narrative is about Asmodeus' machianations. One player, taken by the idea of a campaign involving marching into Hell (a big Diablo fan) came up with his own backstory that marvelously fits into the actual story. It's a bit over the top, but he's playing an amnesiatic angel ("aasimar") who was a part of Zariel's campaign, but lost so hard that he had his memories and divine essence beaten out of him and wakes up some time later from a coma with just the overwhelming desire to impart justice upon the wicked. Normally, I wouldn't let players get away with this nonsense, but since that parallels the actual story delightfully, why not?
I offered the hook, I think put forward by an article here on D&D Beyond of one character being a child (perhaps a bastard) of the Cassalanters. I think that's a really cool hook, especially with the idea that if the characters fail to stop the Cassalanters, the character has a sort of own personal redemption arc revolving around going into hell to foil Asmodeus' grand plan.
Can anyone think of any other tie ins to the plot which would give the players a personal stake in the events?
