hey r know i have a party of 6 People ( fighter/champion,wizard/evocation,rogue/thief,cleric/natur,warlock/luker of the deep,monk/open hand) we play lmop and in the next 2 sessions i think my party gets into the mines and finsih it and get lvl 5.
so my problem is and i spoke with my party briefly about it in out of the abyss the start is by get jailt by drow and lose all the stuff some of my players a ok with losing there stuff thers not as much (wizard´s spell book ) how can i handel that? i like the first chapter and like to play it but i can understand losing the magic itams and all the stuff what they worked for is hard
i think about maybe let each char. pick 1 itam that thy can get back in the prison i don´t know in a box or some sort
The only way I could see players getting back specific stuff like that would be if Jorlan (the demoted Drow captain and ex-Ilvara lover) engineers the whole escape to spite Ilvara. He could then provide the characters with one requested item each (or something like that).
All of their stuff should be stored somewhere in Velkynvelve, and likely in that nearest guard tower. So depending on how the escape goes, they could get all of their items on the way out. Definitely for necessary class items like the wizard's spellbook you should find a way to make sure they get it back. But especially starting at a higher level, it's not out of the question to be able to defeat enough guards to be able to quickly grab their stuff on the way out.
My general rule is - whatever is most fun for everyone, do that. If they all think it would be fun to start with just a single item and losing the other items makes them despise Ilvara even more, then go for it. If losing all of that would spoil their fun, then work things somehow so that they can recover them. The plot should always be secondary to the fun.
I started my group at lvl 1 in OOTA. So was not an issue with equipment since we had no wizard in the party. I would for sure let them get back 1 or 2 items they really want/need.
Out of the Abyss is by far my favorite adventure of them all.
