Hi all, as stated in the thread title, I am a novice in my first campaign. I fear that I have (potentially) hamstrung, or at least severally nerfed, my character's potential by a series of ill thought out choices in development.
As it stands, I am a level 5 dragonborn eldritch knight.
My problem is that I feel like I'm becoming less and less effective as the campaign grows. I'm hoping I could get some advice on how to more efficiently develop my character from this point on; what pitfalls, misguided leveling strategies, or unfocused spells and weapons to avoid. That sort of thing. I'm fully fine knowing there's likely a lot of sighs and rolling eyes at this, but I am but neophyte hatchling hoping to get guidance from my elder scally ones so I might be more able to help my party and get to know the game better.
That's really helpful! One of my biggest problems is finding the spells to choose from and getting lost in the choices. Silly question, but since I don't use a bladed weapon, will those "blade" spells work with my Warhammer?
Yes, both booming blade and green-flame blade will work with your warhammer. When you use your action to cast the spell you make a melee attack with a weapon as part of the same action. It doesn't matter what sort of weapon it is as long as it is a melee attack and not a ranged attack. This means the attack deals the normal damage your warhammer would deal plus the damage from the spell itself.
