I have a player who is fairly big on crafting new and interesting weapons and such things for his gunslinger. My question is how much in game time should i realisticly apply to him crafting new things, like for example he is currently in the works on figuring out a new sniper rifle and such, which im completely fine with him getting im just more concerned about weighing the timing he receives it with not over scaling the dmg hell be doing based on where we are in my campaign.
Welp normal crafting rules say 5g of work can be put into crafting and item a day. Xanthars says roughly 7g a day. I like leaning a little bit higher cause thats just ridiculous imo for even some common items. Also, tinkering checks may result in a defective gun, but one thatll give insight into the next prototype. What level is your percy? Is 2d10 a little too high for your current level? Remember he got his around lvl 10.
First figure out the stats of the weapon he is making. From that figure out how much it should cost. If it is basically a heavy crossbow with extra range and damage, ×3-×4 cost doesn't seem unreasonable.
Then in accordance with the DMG crafting downtime, you divide that cost by 50gp and that is how many weeks it takes (Faerun weeks are tendays, also known as rides, and there is no mention on weekends). So 3 to 4 weeks (30-40 days, or 240-320 hours) of work (not while adventuring) and 75-100gp of parts/material.
You can alternatively just grant it to them at a certain level ("you finally finish it").
And DMG suggests at least 3sp (half for crafting) per bullet. You can just let them melt down 3sp worth of lead for 2 bullets per hour of rest.
