So my campaign is going to be taken over by a friend, basically I am driving it into his so he can take over and we are swapping pc and dm. I need to make a character for this and am thinking of making them a npc first so when I come in taking over the party will be familiar with them. I have a few ideas but not sure what I want to do and could use some help.
I like more serious characters with a morally goodsih view helping others sometimes for pay or maybe because of their code (ironically not a fan of paladins or clerics when it comes lawful good lol) so chaotic good, lawful good, or neutral would be more up the line of alignment choice.
some theme ideas I was thinking more of would be something more tribal like an exiled war chief or a lone survivor of a clan or something sickly but misunderstood like a necromancer who tries to help those who suffer due to his own suffering.
My play styles in rpgs and D&D I prefer casters with lots of utility or melee I like juggernauts standing strong against impact rather than fleeing (not I am strong I am dumb kind of way but in the bulwark protecting allies kind of way more out of conviction or pride than foolish idiocy). When I say utility I mean I would rather summon a minion to help with combat and menial tasks, flood a hallway to stop an advance, teleport, ect rather than big strong fire ball burn everything fast...
Honestly my favorite races lore wise have to be Goliaths, Changelings, Warforged, Semic-Hybrids, and Aasimar, and Kalashtar (yeah I know most are in ebberon but these just vibe with me the most aesthetically and lore wise).
I never played much as a player except twice same campaign long story but as an aasimar forge cleric worshiping gond and it was meh and as a goliath barbarian mercenary searching for the source of the dark magic killing the land like a disease which was meh because the DM went out of his way to stop me from using my strength creatively like last second trying to make a tree to big for me to do anything to when a bandit hid up there... bad DM, sloppy campaign, ect so not a great experience as a player.
My personally feeling on classes Barbarian: Due to the bear totem and the zealot got my attention due to critical roles yasha (storm seems cool) I love utility and thematically pleasing concepts. Warlock: What isn't to like here rp wise plus i like my utility which casters get a lot of but lack the beef of a juggernaut. Wizard: Same reason as warlock Sorc/Druid: Not sure how to feel here on either reading makes me like and dislike them both but never played them Fighter: Meh seems like it wants to be an armored no rage barbarian honestly feel free to change my mind just can't find much interesting here except for the UA and eldritch archetypes. Rogue/ranger: like the idea and concept could make some fun stuff with them would lean more towards rogue though but they don't fit my play style as well. Bard: great fits a huge need for utility between spells and skills for me but idk it's harder for me to make a character concept i can play with it since I feel too self conscious to get into rp for an entertainer. Monk: seems cool like I could do some cool ideas for it but idk feels meh for me lacking utility and the juggernaut feel putting it out of my play style sadly. Blood Hunter: Love the theme and style but seems it may not fit my play style (I love dark macabre, vampire hunters, necromancers, ect) Cleric/Paladin: Hate rping worshiping a god just feels off and uncomfortable for me honestly... which is sad since there are cool subclasses for them and enjoyed the idea for the forge cleric I had but was weird playing him rp wise. Artificer: Actually I love the stuff for this class I mean I can go a full utility caster or healer then if I want I can go battlesmith and be a frontline damage dealer with good AC with a pet! Just I struggle coming up with a character concept I can rp for this one sadly... may just be me running out of creative juices or stepping into foreign soil due to me focusing more on traditional fantasy.
Could anyone help me with making a character concept on this information? would be greatly appreciated!
((Edit)) Wanted to add that I also like deceptive characters illusions/enchantment, altering appearance, fooling enemies into attacking each other, ect. At one point I thought about a Changeling Rogue Assassin with the actor feat and other things to be focused on fooling the enemy/targets and getting close with poison and/or a dagger/rapier while their guard is down.
You never mentioned the campaign setting or what the other PCs are. That may help with your decision. Like a cleric for curse of stranhd would be way different than say one built for ebberon. Or if there was already a cleric than I may be a druid.
Oh sorry my bad it is a temporary low magic setting basically the main adventure will lead to the suppressed magic being released causing the dying magic of the land to flourish again but also bringing back dangers of old from the planer war between all the planer entities that the seal locked out to end the wars between celestials, fiends, primordials, ect which allowed the other races to flourish and build civilizations taking the land bit by bit. The land is known as Coranth to the west an untamed forest protected by fey from the civilized lands, to the north an icy tundra filled with savage clans of barbarians and the such, to the south a desert too dangerous for outsiders not just climate wise but the creatures there are not to be trifled with, and to the east is Delmora a civilized land of grassy plans, rivers, and a forest ruled by a high council voted in by the people.
Hope this helps! Also I plan for warforged to be a part of a fallen civilization hidden in the underdark that took over and started living there, most races from across the books are there whether from the beginning or during the planer wars when other races had a chance of ending up coming to this crystal sphere. The tales of the planer wars created stigma though for Gensai, Aasimar, and Tieflings though due to the source of the problem and their bloodlines.
(I should add I think I may want to make a firbolg for this since the race seems to fit well with it's abilities and theme)
So for your own idea make a character then pick what class makes it happen instead of a class and race then character.
Also paladins do have their code and clerics their gods, but how evolved they have to be with their God could vary greatly. There is a book the lies of Locke lamora where a theif and conman is actually a priest of a god that has 2 requirement one being make those in power remember they aren't untouchable. There is no worshipping required, but you have to know all the other gods and how they worship to sneak in and deceive others often times to please your god. Your goals could more so align rather than you worship a god. Also oddly enough biblically there are prophets that argue with God despite being his prophet so the relationship doesn't have to be a perfect worshipper.
Also you didn't mention druid, but they tend to be supportive. Fighters can be good and if you multiclass into mastermind thief with the battlemaster you could become a serious pain to deal with for the enemy. The ranged help action as a bonus, the maneuvers, everyone would be have advantage and enemies disadvantage. Your character could be some tactical genius who simple controls every fight.
You can also use a warlock as a solid tank with support options with a fighter multiclass. The hexblade would allow you to focus on your charisma so you can rp better without losing out on the fighters strength.
The best option I would think for what you want though is the battlemaster artificer since bard isn't your flavor. They tank, the support, they heal, they have a pet.
Personally, I want to run a wizard who thinks he's a warlock due to mental instability. I like the idea of having to do things because "my patron" told me to. I would make up a pack, something like "Pack of the Trickster" for an illusionist specialist.
