I find it odd that creatures that have resistance or immunities to bludgeoning, piercing, slashing, from nonmagical attacks are so vulnerable to the world.
Example: Werewolves have immunity to bludgeoning, slashing, and piercing nonmagical attacks that aren't silvered. One of them could laugh all day at a fire giant attacking it, but then fall into a 30 foot spiked pit and die.

"............anybody got any potatoes? We could drop a potato in each hole an' see which ones get viciously mauled by horrible monsters?"
A werewolf is only immune to specifically bludgeoning piercing and slashing damage that isn't from a silvered or magical weapon. It has no resistance to other types of damage, such as fire. It could fall into a spiked pit (that wasn't filled with silver spikes) and not take any damage, but could be killed with a silver dagger.
When a werewolf says it has immunity to "Bludgeoning, Piercing, and Slashing from Nonmagical Attacks that aren't Silvered", that only applies to attacks that deal bludgeoning, piercing or slashing damage. It goes "Is this bludgeoning, piercing or slashing damage? Cool, is it magical? No, is it silvered? Nope, then I'm immune". If the weapon was either magical or silvered or was dealing damage other than bludgeoning, piercing or slashing, that would go through normally.
I think most DMs would rule around that, but RAW yeah.
Though even RAW it is still an unusual/rare occurrence for a monster to take environmental damage. Other than falling and the devs intended fall damage to get around resistance*.
Falling damage is just flat damage, no attack roll or saving throw. It's as DxJxC mentioned it's designed to get around resistances and immunity.
It is still bludgeoning damage, so Treants still have a leg up. Or a root up, so to speak.
They are currently a rarity, and I'm sure were just overlooked in the monster overhaul. It was previously proposed that to clear certain dungeons, just summon an elemental or have a lycanthrope PC and have it clear all the traps and such. That is no longer feasible. Or, I should say you can, it would just be expensive and time consuming as the creatures would die quickly.

[Edit]Resistance to non-magic weapons.
Falling damage: bludgeoning yes, attack no. Unless you consider normal gravity an attack.

You have resistance to bludgeoning, piercing, and slashing damage.
They lack the key part of the monster phrase "attacks".
