Hey, I'm new to the dnd scene but would really like to make a campaign that can last yrs in game and months irl. I've got 0 clue on how to create the campaign, mainly how to work out monster and npc stats as well as how to work out outcomes from the dice. Would appreciate any tips from dms and players who know what to do. Cheers.
use dndbeyond's encounter builder feature. will help you with some monster. you'll have access to monsters from the basic rules, if you want to create your own monster, just find a monster from there and use it's stats and just reskin it or one of it's abilities to fit your desires.
As far as a campaign that can last years in game and months irl. Sounds hard to do, I wouldn't worry about time like that honestly, especially if it's your first time. Just put pen to paper and start writing and see what comes of it. Get Lost Mines of Phandelver (which is free on dndbeyond right now) and you can either run that for your first time just to get a feel for it. It talks you through everything pretty easily and will give you experience with dice outcomes and whatnot. Or do what I did, read it like a book from start to finish and that is how I started to learn how to create my own adventure.
Watch some D&D shows online too. either some Official D&D stuff run by Chris Perkins, Mike Mearls or whatever. You can search Joe Manganiello D&D on youtube and watch some games with him in it which is pretty cool. You can learn a lot from watching and studying how they do things.

Thanks for the advise. Didn't know about the lost mines of phandelver campaign. I'll give it a look over.
