My point ro be made today is that the Artificer is subpar mechanicly and flavourwize. Why?
First of all considering its power as a caster reaches 5 level at a limited arcane spell list
Second Its bread and butter in and outside combat is bolstering its own and the parties gear (consumables/ non) in a matter of minutes- days so they are better prepere. That is to say: enchanting equipment, making potions and scrolls at low prices and copy any magic there is to them
Flavour
I know it might sound wierd but if you played 3.5e you would know that artificers has their own magical treditions called infusions. Aside from the mechanical aspect that differed from regular spellcasting it felt diffarent then being a wizard or cleric because it consentarted on gear and tech. Allthough much slower to cast it had a big impact.
I feel like if the proposal was that psyonics would have their own system that suited their flavour of play then so should the artificer.
In mt openion it was never meant to be a powerfull class but far more versitile and fun and quirky having out of the box solutions at hand
Depends on how strict your DM is about magic items. If he is generous, then the artificer is weak. If he is harsh - as in finding common items at Level 6, uncommon at 10, rare at 15, then the Artificer really shines.
But I would agree that the artificer is not as good as most other classes if the DM is more generous with magic items.
That said, it is one of the better classes for a Wizard to multi-class. 1 or 2 levels can be really worth it. You learn a lot more spells, freeing up spells prepared for higher levels, do not give up much, and can get proficiency in Constition saves rather than wisdom - a huge benefit for concentration checks.
