This is my first homebrew item posted publicly. I'm hoping its simplicity will actually be a virtue, since I find a lot of items in the homebrew catalog to be overpowered or over tuned. Let me know what you think about the rarity (very rare) and features on the blade, and anything else I could do to improve it.
Pretty good, especially when you realize that the level at which bards change their Bardic Inspiration to be a d8 is at level 5, which is also the level that martial classes get Extra Attack. Overall I think it's pretty balanced. Well done!
Thanks! I did like the idea that if a DM let a bard find this "early" the rapier's damage actually goes down to a d6 for the two attacks. At those levels it's probably still overpowered with the +1 bonus, but at least it's not 2d8+10 or whatever. I figure a +3 dex bonus for most bards level 2-4, then it becomes 2d6+8 for the round, which averages to 15 damage per round for 1 minute at the cost of a bardic inspiration die - and having to make melee attacks up close and personal. That assumes they land both hits - it could be 1d6+4 if they miss one.
