Hi, everyone! (and mods, I'm sorry if this is in the wrong section!)
This evening during our bi-weekly game, my friends and I thought up a new in-game sport for Dungeons and Dragons adventurers. We call it Kickshroom, and I laid out the rules below. We thought it was fun and thought others might think so too. If you like it, feel free to give it a go in your own games!
The Game:
The game is played when a party is camped in a suitable place where mushrooms can be found.
Basically, two players take turns kicking a mushroom from 10 feet away at each other. One player kicks, trying to hit the other person in the face, and the other player kneels and tries to catch the mushroom in their mouth. Points are awarded for successes, and an eventual winner is declared.
The goal is to be the first player to a goal score of 8. This number can change based on the environment and other circumstances if both players agree a different goal score would be better.
Setting Up the Game:
The players find as many mushrooms as they can within a 50 foot radius from the center of camp.
In standard Kickshroom, someone in the group identifies whether the mushrooms found are edible or toxic. The toxic mushrooms are not used. Only mushrooms that are still attached to the surface of the thing they grew on can be used. This INCLUDES mushrooms growing on logs or other objects/fauna.
If there is no one with suitable Nature/Survival/Medicine skills available to make such a determination, or if for any other reason the players choose to play with toxic or potentially toxic mushrooms, Hardcore Kickshroom rules are in effect.
Rules of Standard Kickshroom:
The game starts with a coin toss. The winner of the coin toss chooses whether they want to kick or catch first.
One kick per turn, regardless of outcome.
The first player to the goal score wins. If the supply of mushrooms runs out before reaching the goal score, the player with the highest score wins. In the result of a tie, the players have three options: they can create a separate contest of their choosing to determine the victor; they can postpone the results until the next Kickshroom match; or they can simply accept the tie (cowards).
The dice rolls for the main Kickshroom game are as follows:
To Kick: Roll 1d20 + Dexterity modifier.
For a roll resulting in a 0-10, the mushroom is broken apart or smushed into the ground.
The player takes a penalty. *Three broken mushroom penalties result in disqualification and forfeiture of the match.*
A roll resulting in 11-15 misses, and the catcher cannot attempt to catch the mushroom.
0 points awarded to the kicker.
A roll resulting in 16-20 flies within one foot of the catcher’s head.
1 point awarded to the kicker.
0 points if the catcher catches it.
A roll above 20 is on target to hit the catcher in the face.
2 points awarded to the kicker.
0 points if the catcher catches it.
To Catch: Roll a Dexterity Saving Throw.
The Dex Save roll must merely beat the kicker’s roll.
A catch can only be made on kicks with rolls of 16 or more. A catch scores 1 point for the catcher and negates any points the kicker would have scored.
Rules for Hardcore Kickshroom:
The standard rules apply except in the match’s outcomes. The loser of the match is not allowed to be healed until the mushroom’s toxicity has worn off or the player’s health has reached zero. The winner of the match may be healed if necessary.
Ties are not allowed. If the players run out of mushrooms and have equal scores, an emergency arm wrestling match decides the winner.
No aid is to be given to players during a match. If a player becomes unable to play, they forfeit the match.
I think that’s everything we’ve figured out for the rules, but let me know if any clarification is needed.
Please feel free to put your own spin on Kickshroom and post the results!
Oh, and let it be known that Lira Thornbrush, Halfling Rogue in the Shield of Phlan adventuring party, was the inaugural DnD Multiverse Kickshroom Championship!
