So I have homebrewed this item for the Phantom Rogue in my campaign, who is a follower of the Raven Queen. Each of the players will be getting a powerful artifact to help defeat the BBEG, you get the idea, standard stuff. The idea for each item is for it to be a powerful addition to a high level character, without being gamebreaking.
So this item builds on the soul trinkets the phantom gets and gives a lot of smaller abilities many of them fuelled by the trinkets. Im wondering what people think of it, and if it maybe needs some sort of activated, once a day, powerful ability to pull it all together. Please give me any feedback you have, I really want to make this a special item to help close out an awesome 3 year campaign.
The Item:
The Mantle of souls is an ancient artifact created by the Raven Queen as a gift to her first Champion. Over the centuries the mantle has been passed down to many new champions and has been lost and found countless times.
A black shoulder cape made with feathers from the Raven Queens own flock. The mantle itself harnesses the power of Death and is powered by the souls of the departed.
Blessings of the Queen. Created for the Raven Queen's Champion the mantle gives several benefits
While attuned to the mantle your dexterity and constitution scores both increase by 2, to a maximum of 24.
Drawn to the power of the cloak souls coalesce around it. At the end of a short or long rest you gain one soul trinket.
The cloak brings the wearer closer to the border between life and death, as a result you can use 3 soul trinkets as an action to cast the blink spell.
Armour of Souls. A flickering mist of souls is constantly swirling around the cape flickering back and forth through the veil between life and death. This shroud of souls grants the following benefits:
While attuned to the mantle your AC increases by 1
While attuned to the cape you have resistance to necrotic damage
As a reaction you can expend one of your soul trinkets to cast the shield spell
as an action you can expend 1 souls trinket to cast the spell armour of agathys at first level. You can increase the level of the spell by expending 1 additional soul trinket per level of the spell. the damage caused by the spell is necrotic, as opposed to cold.
When hit by an attack within 10 feet of you, you can expend one soul trinket to deal 2d8 necrotic damage to the attacker.
Silent as the Grave. The souls that flit around the cape can gather around you, silencing your movements and hiding your tracks. This grants the following benefits:
Whilst attuned to the mantle you cannot be tracked by non-magical means.
Whilst attuned to the mantle you have advantage stealth checks.
As an action you can expend 3 soul trinkets to cast the pass without a trace spell.
As an action you can expend 1 soul trinket to cast the invisibility spell on your self.
Whispers of the Departed. The souls surrounding the mantle constantly whisper creating an ominous presence for anyone wearing it, and occasionally imparting useful information. This grants the following benefits:
While wearing the cape the strange appearance and otherworldly whispering of the spirits grant advantage on all intimidation checks.
When you make an ability check whilst attuned to the cloak you can expend 1 soul trinket to add 1d10 to the result of the check.(this must be done before you see the result of the roll)
Servants of the Grave. The souls of the cape can temporarily manifest a semi-corporal form to assist the wearer of the mantle:
As an action you can spend 1 soul trinket to summon a ghostly servant. It acts identically to an unseen servant, but has a visible ghostly body.
As an action you can spend 2 soul trinkets to summon a specter. This specter acts on your initiative and you can give it commands as a bonus action, otherwise it acts on its own accord to protect you.
Thanks for taking the time to read this, looking forward to any feedback you guys have!
